I use 62-1 to wipe the hard drives. Takes care of the user's folders if they had any. Done this a couple of times and the customer seemed satisfied. I also go into the web interface and clear out all of their profiles and addresses. There's a sim for this but I like to do it from the webpage. I also reset the NIC and make sure the network settings do not have any entries other than the defualt. We have picked up serveral used copiers where the profiles and folders are still on the machine so I make it a point to delete this info on ours!

    Good luck.

Alternatively you can remove the HDD and connect it to a computer, assign a drive letter and format that way, if for whatever reason you can't/don't want to get it done via sims.

Depending on customer's HDD usage it may even be faster than sim 62.

Manhattan makes a good USB SATA/IDE adapter for hard drives.

Depending on how much it was used, anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour is what I've experienced.

To totally eliminate the data so it is not recoverable, you might consider removing the hard drive from the copier and attach the drive to a Windows workstation. Using an application like DBAN, which is free to write a series of 1's and 0's to eliminate all data. The reformatting process will remove the directory structure from being seen by the average user. However, if the hard drive were to be removed by a skilled individual it would be possible to recover the data on the hard drive. I would not want you to be liable for any data that was found later on. Highly unlikely, but the remote possibility remains.

Another option is to sell the HDD to the customer and let him do whatever he want with it (format, erase, destroy etc ..) This way you are a 100% sure you wont get in any trouble if data are recovered from the hard disk.

Or as Tennwalker said, use a third party software to erase the data.

A week ago i formatted a MX-453 using 62-1 it took an hour. Make sure to write the meter reading because upon formatting the meter reading also will reset. Luckily I print the configuration and return back the meter reading. After formatting i also update the firmware.

62-1 doesn't reset meters... Must have done 24-6 sometime before that.

Same for me as mx270hb said, 62-1 refurbs and meters stay intact.

We normally do a 62-1 to reset the harddrive, reset the nic, 66-29 to remove destinations, and a 66-10 image memory clear.

if all else fails hand the HD to the customer so they can do what they want with it and bill them for a new one. if they are concerned about their data they wont care about an $80 bill, its better than spending $500 on a DSK.
