    [Jamming] Sharp AR-163 jamming from Tray 1

    Hi folks,

    Got a Sharp AR163 which jams constantly from tray 1. Bypass feed it fine.

    Initially, I thought it was because the wrong paper size had been selected, but even after correcting this setting, the machine still jams.

    This isn't a proper jam, as in there is something getting in the way. The paper just stops, sometimes around the drum, sometimes with the leading edge in the fuser.

    I can't see any reason for this whatsoever. I did notice that if I put A3 paper in the tray, that it copies OK from Tray 1. I was thinking along the lines of a paper passage sensor fault (ie a paper late jam, or phantom jam)?

    Anyone been this way before?

      What jam codes? =^..^=
      If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
      1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
      5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

          Remove the paper tray. Look inside the machine at the semi-circular feed tyre assembly.
          "Are the feed tyres sitting flat side down 180 deg correct." Make sure the feed tyres are not slightly turned, say 15 deg."

          If the feed tyres appears slighlty turned (machine in idle state) then the problem is a small plastic lip has worn in the feed clutch "solenoid lever"
          Using a file or knife remove this very small plastic lip as it prevents the feed clutch arbor from releasing the feed tyre assembly at the correct timing interval. Eg feed correctly. Get down and look real hard at the soleniod lever; it is so small you can miss the worn lip.

              You didn't say if you cleaned the feed roller clutch or adjusted the spring tension on the clutch? This will give you randomly moving jams like you described if the clutch is slipping.

                  Sharp put a modification on for awhile that was supposed to help guide envelopes when tray fed. That modification was a couple of mylar guides attached on either side of the paper in sensor. Over time, that mylar would pull loose and partially block the paper path. If you pull the cassette completely out of the machine, you can look in to see if this machine has those mylars. If it does, it is very likely that at least one of them needs to be removed. If you have to remove one, make sure to get all of the adhesive off of the paper guide.

                          remove the mylar envelope guides as allready stated. Test in simullation the ps and exit sensors. The sensors probably are bad. Just replace all 3. Also the newer style feed roller seem to work better. It is a very basic mechanical clutch/solonoid system.

                              I would assume you have cleaned the half moon shaped pickup tires with alcohol as they gather paper dust which affects the progress of paper and can result in jamming as you describe. Lead edge jams in fuser can be upper fuser roller gear not turning due to broken gear hub. Also make sure spring is still on registration actuator and if okay use can of air to blow out sensor as sometimes developer or toner can get in that area and actuator may hang up for a millisecond and throw machine in jam mode..                                   Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll make a return visit next week and spend some time on it.

                                  Incidentally blackcat4866, there are no jam codes on this model. The log just records the position of the last 30 jams, and displays them on the jam indicator diagram by lighting the appropriate LED. In this case, all the jams were shown at the fuser entry point.

                                      So it's a fuser jam code. That narrows it down a lot. When I'm back in front of the database tonight I can add more. =^..^=

                                          There a a lot of possibilities for jamming on this model, and some really strange ones. If you're really serious about solving this problem examine each of these possibilities. And there are four separate jam codes that can be identified on the display when it jams. There may be more information stored in sim U24-01. =^..^=

                                              The paper feed clutch might be the problem. I have had a similar situation before and replacing the clutch resolved it. Don't try to clean or adjust spring but rather replace clutch with new one. It worked for me. Good luck.

                                                  Thanks again for all the information. There certainly is a lot to check for such a basic desktop machine.

                                                  Will let you know how I get on. Sometimes it's questionable how much time to spend on some of these smaller, older products nowadays.
