I didn't know any of those box's still were in existence. Your question is are the doc feeders junk? Yes, a moving belt with rollers that always fell apart, not to mention the feed rollers on that doc. feeder with the allen screws for pressure adjustments and light sensors that always needed replacement or adjustments.
I feel the two are not related, I would blow out the doc. feeder and sensors, make sure you get them all. It almost sounds like a pot adjustment on the doc feeder board. Basically, mark and twist until this " false jam" does not occur anymore. If that doesn't do it could be a bad light sensor... Oh, I also forgot to mention that damn one way that used to slip and cause sizing errors all the time too as well. Good luck!

There's a procedure in the manual to setting those reflective sensors. Follow it and you'll be golden.

Cougars have been obsolete for at least 5 years. If you need any part, it makes a great doorstop. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
      1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
      5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.
