We have had several issues related to mono jobs improperly clicking the color meter. This occurs even though the black and white check box on the main page of the print driver is selected or defaulting to black and white under the color tab. I have found a simple fix that has alleviated 99.9% of "cross clicking" the meters.
Go into Printer Preferences, Color, Advanced Color and set the 2 slide bars left to Black Only, click OK, then Apply before closing the print driver.

The .1% stems from a scenario where Acrobat Pro v11 clicks all .pdf files as color; even when set to Black Only. It was a few month back so not quite sure if they fixed that glitch yet; but still worth mentioning.
