If the customer wants to send colour there is very little you can do apart from reducing DPI. If it is just black and white documents, if this model supports it, you could try Mono instead of greyscale.

Albeit, they should be using scan to file for larger files, then send them from their computer.

Like ruben says, the limiter for scan to email is usually the attachment size allowed by the email account. For example, one of my accounts was limited to 2MB attachments. That can be as little as 20 monochrome, or 3 color images. The things you can do to reduce the size of the attachments are:

      1) default to monochrome rather than color scans. A color scan is 10x larger than a monochrome scan.
      2) reduce default DPI. For standard text 200 x 200 is adequate. For small text like legal documents minimum of 300 x 300. 300x300 is 2.2x larger file than 200x200.
      3) default to Text original type.

And yes, scan-to-SMB and scan-to-FTP do not have these size limitations. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
      1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
      5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.
