    Almost full moon!

2 days before, 3 days after is what I usually see.

Brand new out of the box MJ-6106 hole punch. Ran about a dozen punch copies.
Then ran some for the saddle stitch finisher...jammed at the entrance of the finisher.
Pulled the hole punch unit slider...broken gear. Now how in the h*ll did it run a dozen
    before it finally fell apart?

Sheesh! I bet this would never be seen if the gears were make out of something more durable, like a good thick heavy plastic or, I dunno, METAL??

I've ran into that a few years ago, before I was on copytechnet. Only the machine made it customers office.

Maybe it was on the verge of breaking and the strain of twelve punches broke the gears back???

I had the exact same thing happen to me. Brand new. Installed. Tested thoroughly. Customer called back later that day saying the machine had an error. Tool it apart and found the rack gear was broken just like your's is. Had to order a new rack gear.
