Take inner cover off, take a metal plate off, unplug a bunch of plugs from the top board, remove top board, unplug/remove HDD. Replace HDD and reverse steps and do 08-690 again.
I will not give you service manuals or firmware.

Try swapping out the HDD with another IDE HDD. Capacity shouldn't really be a factor.

My previous post: "Take inner cover off, take a metal plate off, unplug a bunch of plugs from the top board, remove top board, unplug/remove HDD. Replace HDD and reverse steps and do 08-690 again."

You do not need firmware when replacing HDD. Do as ToshibaTech says. Just check HDD's jumper settings!

Concerning HDD capacity. I am sure that 10, 20, 30 and 40 Gb will work. I have tested unsuccessfully 80 Gb with 32Gb limit.

.... interesting the 80GB didn't work? When I tried to order one the other day it pointed the many times updated but still old 80GB number to the new 160GB drive toshiba is using for the EB1, 2, 3 machines with IDE drives. I wonder how they are supposed to work.

Yes It seems strange. As I see there is a BSI from 26.07.2010 that 40Gb is discontinued and 80Gb is available. That 32Gb limit must be the culprit. I haven't test it as 80Gb...
