    Networking of an E-Studio 351c

We recently obtained an E-Studio 351c multi-function device. We have a Linksys router that the device is directly connected to. I have installed the drivers on our various laptops and we can all print through the router connection. However, if I enter the IP address of the device, 9 times out of 10 I get a time out error. The 10th time I get to the Top Access page, but if I try to click options I then get a time out error.

The device shows up in our windows explorer network tree, but if you click on it to access the public hard drive on it you get a "Device not accessible" error. I have the SMB enabled and have checked the subnet mask and default gateway, and everything matches our router settings.

So we can print and at times communicate with the machine, but we are not able to access the Top Access web base for E-filing and other settings. Does anyone have any suggestions that do not involve replacing parts and boards? It is a newly refurbished machine, so I feel strongly we are dealing with a software setting.

    Thanks in advance.

As much of a pain it is, you should test with a PC directly connected to the copier so that you can try to eliminate the router.

Also make sure that the copier isn't set to 10 BaseT for the network speed.

Once other thing that I have seen with similar symptons is a duplicate IP address on the network. Try unplugging the copier's network cable and PINGing the IP address, or just try changing the IP to another address.
Please don't ask me for firmware or service manuals as refusal often offends.

That wouldn't be a pain at all. In fact, I did that this morning. But that really didn't get me anywhere. It appears that in order to access Top Access you have to be on some type of a network as the only way to got to it is through a web browser. I had tried the pinging with the MFP disconnected and verified nothing else was residing on the network with that address. I know the copier is set to Auto in the network section. I Booted it up to test mode and ran a 693 to set the NIC to factory defaults and reset all of the addresses and HTML enabling just in case something was hidden deeper from a previous setting. Again, I can print and see the device on the network, but I can't access anything on the hard drive.

Maybe the next thing to look at is formatting the HDD or upgrading or firmware.

Firmware can be a major contributor to hardware and software fixes.

I have no problem formatting the hard drive as there is nothing on it that we need, not certain how that would solve a connection problem though. I see that the firmware is something that everyone is quick to suggest as the solution to almost everything. Not really sure I want to go down that route since it is strictly a networking issue. I can print and copy currently (even across the network, I just can't connect to the device consistently) Firmware upgrades can go really bad and potentially knock me three steps back.

You did use a cross over cable?

are you running vista or windows7.if so when you get to the topaccess page try the admin tab (name blank password 123456)there is a setting there, where you can disable digital signing.if you are able to access and change this, you should be able to open a path to the copier from the start run command(example \\ipaddress\)

Toshibadale, I just used a regular USB cable to directly attach to the MFP, but even then I couldn't get to Top Access or to anything on the Hard Drive.

ss12, I am running Vista. When I enter the IP address it usually just times out. Twice I got to the Top Access main screen. On those two occasions I clicked the Admin tab, but then it timed out (as if there was no reply from the device) so I can't make any changes through Top Access. I've used the default password 123456 to change settings on the LCD, but thus far I can't figure out what setting I am missing to be able to connect through the network.

You willnot be able to access the machine (other than print) via usb. You need a network connection to access the file share or the top access section.
Use a laptop and a crossover cable and set the ip address one off from each other (192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.99 for example) and make the subnet the same, gateway does not matter for crossover.
then try the ip address and see if it comes up. Also with Vista and above the firmware needs to be over v321 (I think).
And Star Trek was just a tv show...yeah right!

You won't be able to reach Top Access from a USB cable. You need to use a network cable (normal or crossover as new netowrk cards in PC's can sense if the connection is wrong and internally cross or un-cross) from your PC direct to your copier.

This may also mean that you have to enter in an IP address manually into your PC and copier so that they can talk correctly.

As for formatting the HDD, you would be surprised what formatting the HDD can actually help you fix. This is a silly one, but none the less, we had Toshiba recommend that we format a HDD in one machine to try and help a dev leak issue. Didn't help, but Toshiba recommended it.

Now I also remember that there was an issue ages ago with Vista trying to communicate correctly to these machines and there was a firmware update to solve this, especially for the point where you are trying to get to the UNC path of the copier. Let us know what firmware version you are running (I think from memory that this model will display it on the NIC Config page that you can print out).

Ok, I can attempt this. I will need to do some research on how to set the IP address of my laptop, but that shouldn't be an issue. The bigger problem is the firmware (potentially) Off of the function list I get F/W Ver. : T410SY0U232 which would seem to be well below a v321. Which would lead to my next question that I have seen several times on here but never really saw a solid answer. Where do I get the latest Firmware and how do I upgrade?

The firmware you are running is fairly old, so it would be a good idea to update this as you can probably understand, firmware fixes alot of issues.

The current version that we have here in Australia is T410SY0E354.

                            Connection with usb

If u got only usb....connect the usb with a pc install toshiba 351c drivers to that pc make a test print via usb see it has printed....
then goto printers on your pc share it for other users on the network and locate the printer driver on each pc you have on the network. then u can print from any pc within ur network
                            OKKKKKKKKK

Unfortunately this is not the issue. Printing is fine, it is the internal web page and SMB path of the machine that is the issue.
