Estudio 450 - remove hard drive prior to recycling unit
Estudio 450 - remove hard drive prior to recycling unit
I have an old estudio 450 that does not work and I want to get rid of (recycle), but I need to know how to remove the hard drive that stored scanned documents first. Thanks!

Unless you used "secure print", or scanned images to the user boxes, there is nothing on the HDD. Although I understand your concerns with security, and give you a "high 5" for being green, the HDD is the least of the environmental concerns..50#s of plastic, the stuff the PWBs are made from, and any remaining developer and toner are probably worse than the HDD. Maybe you could trade it in on a new box from a local dealer..they will strip/slavage it, or sell it to a re-seller (winds up in some 3rd world country where it's considered "state of the art")..Emujo

There are scanned images on the HD.... I've had to retrieve images before. I offered the unit to the tech repair guy who was going to start his own copy business, but the part that is broken was going to be too expensive to be worth HIS while. So.... I think it is end life for this baby.
Thanks.

Unless you are using the user box functions (efile on Toshiba), or secure print, there is nothing "stored" on the HDD. It's similar to your PC HDD, Info may be temp written to the HDD, but the data is not allocated, and will be written over at some point. It's not like the scanned image is written to to the HDD as a PDF, or a TIFF, then printed out as a copy job. Some MFPs don't even need an HDD, but they still print/scan/copy. Most of the processing is done in RAM and all that info is lost at power off. The HDD adds the option of storing print jobs, and maybe some virtual memory to work with larger scanned docs, and memory x-mission when faxing. That big scare a few years back was valid, but that was data found on the drive that was held there by the users utilzing the boxes, secure print, and possibly unauthenticated jobs waiting to be deleted or released by an authorized user. I know KM offers HDD sanitizing over and above DOD levels and I would gaurentee if wiped by the tech prior to the MFP leaving the site your basic to semi-pro hacker wont find anything left behind. I'm sure some TV character like Abby from NCIS might be able to use her special programs to "lift" info from the HDD, but the rest of us normal people will see a blank drive. That being said....the only way to absolutly ensure the drive is safe is to run a screwdriver through it an toss it in the fireplace. Emujo
