    E 451C won't wake up

Just recently the copier was in energy save mode with a blank display. It would not get back to ready. Had to turn machine on and off. Has also been unable to print or scan even though the config reports an IP address. Now today it went to sleep and would not wake up. He had to turn it off for 30 minutes before it would return to ready. It will copy and fax, no print or scan. Network initializes. Is this a hard drive problem?

Have you checked the logic level voltage (5.0vdc)? Machines of this vintage can have the 5.0 sag to 3.9vdc or lower. Usually you'll get carousel errors, but it could be anything. If I remember correctly it's VR1 on the power supply. Aim for 5.2vdc, measured at the ADF.

Note: I expected the response from the VR to be linear. It was anything but linear. As I turned anti-clockwise, the value started to drop, then rise, then drop, then spike past 5v, then come back down. Perhaps the best approach would be to turn off the machine, note where the VR is pointed (say: 2:30 on the clock), then spin the VR back and forth a few times to scratch away the corrosion. Home it back to where you started, power up, then set the voltage.

If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.
