[Misc] e-studio 452 tray lift noise

I have a Toshiba e-Studio 452 (page count 400k) that makes a clunking noise. I have isolated it to the tray 1 lift mechanism. The noise occurs if the tray is half full or so. It doesn't occur if the tray is nearly empty (light load) or if it's full (not much movement). It's not the tray itself. After swapping trays the noise still comes from the tray 1 position. What is the most likely cause? Sounds like a gear missing a tooth but so far I don't see it. Could it be the lift motor case, or would that affect all trays?
I've gotten around the problem for now by setting tray 1 to size A4 so it never gets selected, and leaving it almost empty. (I mostly work on HP and Canon, this is the only Toshiba machine I service).

Yes, this is the Lift Gear/Motor Case on the rear frame, encased in white plastic. Very easy to remove, 4 screws and a motor connector. Once you gently break it open (don't break the plastic tab holders), you will likely find one or more gears with teeth broken, causing your noise. Good luck!

There are also spring clutches for each coupler that can slip. The gear failure is more common though. =^..^=

The lift pack for the eS453 is physically identical to the one for the eS2500C. The 453 pack is black. the 2500C pack is white. I've swapped them both ways. =^..^=
