I've got a Xerox DC c320 with a problem trying to scan to email. I get error 16-781, which means it can't connect to a FTP server. I don't want to use a FTP server. I'm pretty sure I don't have to. How do I get around this?

Hi. Make sure you have a valid SMTP IP server address and entered under protocol settings. Your server might also need SMTP authentication in order for scan-to-email to work. Also on the Centerware / browser access, make sure that <send email> and <UDP> are ticked

Still no joy
Still no joy on this one. I have set the subnet mask, gateway, and DNS to match the mail settings for PCs in the office. I have tested the email account using a PC. Tested OK.
When I try to scan to email I still get error 016-781.
I've attached the System Settings List in the hope that someone can help.
Cheers

The local ip 10.1.1.41 should be relaying to an ip address (203.55.231.___) that is consistent to the gateway 203.55.231.88 ... or otherwise a gateway which is 10.1.1.___ which is highly unlikely.
If you get into one of your customer's computer, go to the DOS/ command prompt and type 'ipconfig /all' <enter>. you will see the pattern of the ip, subnet and g/w.
Also, it is important to check the SMTP authentication at customer's server so that the firewall (assumed) will accept email sending from the machine. ThanksComment

That's all I get.Hi. Try using 203.0.178.191 as your SMTP server address. If still not working, you have to ask the IT-support of your customer for the correct SMTP/ ISP server address and if there's any authentication required.

I've set up a local mail server, temporarily, to get things working. The printer is now scanning to email fine, so long as the local mail server is running. This points to an authentication problem with the ISP, which I will now deal with.
In the meantime, if anyone wants a Freeware mail server consider the ArGoSoft products, which are free:
ArGo Software Design Homepage
I've attached the Fuji Xerox Technical Bulletin on setting up the ArGoSoft Mail Server to work with the M24 range.
Hope some of you find this stuff useful.
Kind regards,

1. you need to enable 'send email' in your protocol settings
2. your machine needs a software key to enable email
3. your customer's ISP needs to be SMTP authenticated
4. you got the wrong smtp server IP address
5. your customer has a firewall preventing it from sending email
If all has been checked and still not working, try ARGOSOFT as previously suggested. Many thanksComment

Also, some SMTP IP address requires DNS & WINS relaying IP address/es. You might want to re-check the settings.Comment

I've had many issue with scan to email on different machines on different networks.
Often the solution is incorrect settings etc.. But if these are OK; then I've found the problem to be that often machines do not like any delay when sending an email - and authentication: requiring a user name and password for the SMTP server - can cause delays and thus the scan to email fails.
The solution is to use a SMTP service like: SMTP Server - smtp2go The Worldwide SMTP Server. that does NOT require authentication - instead, it will only send from a registered email. There is a small charge. There are other suppliers as well - Google "SMTP service" etc.Comment
