I normally work with Ricoh Aficio MP2550's and similar machines but I have a customer that took over some new locations that have Xerox WC5740 and WC7535 units and wanted to know if I could take these on for them as well. Is it going to be worth my time? Don't have a lot of experience with Xerox and don't want to get my butt in a sling by saying I can do the service and then making a good customer mad.
Should I fool with these machines?

Re: Should I fool with these machines?
I suppose it depends how you learn machines. If you sit there and only use a service manual then no, do not go near them with out the PWS service manual.
If you learn by pulling a machine apart and putting it back together then there is no reason not to look after it.
Most of the things that go will be the same as in any machine but you need to know what is causing what IQ issue (error codes are a seperate thing anyway). An IQ issue in a Rioch caused by a drum may be caused by a fuser in the Xerox. Like any machine you need to keep upto date with service items and filters. Unlike most machines the Xerox ones do not have a cleaning rod for the laser units. They are cleaned manually. -

If you have to ask, then you probably already know this intuitively, that little voice inside warning you not to go there. Listen to it man.
It's been my experience that the customers tend to hate the Xerox machines with a passion. Usually due to bad support.
If you're inclined to do it anyway, make sure you can find tech manuals, parts manuals, tech bulletins and have a reliable source for parts first.Comment

Re: Should I fool with these machines?
Thanks for the input. I did tell them it's depending on being able to get proper support. From what I've seen as far as costs of parts on Xerox I'm leaning towards no.

Light fuse, get away!
Seriously I don't like turning away business but I won't get involved with xerox. Just not worth getting bit in the ass again. Only thing I can think of right now as an example is if you "touch a hot lamp and get burned, you learn not to touch it again"Comment

typically Xerox parts are going to eat you alive ($$$) and it always seems to be more than one part that causes the problem.... unless you can get the customer to pay for ALL parts put in the machine ( my boss doesn't and bitches about the $$$ he has to "eat"

Re: Should I fool with these machines?
No not under warranty. In fact the 5740 has 500,000 clicks and the customer would only be paying for consumables. XMC had the previous contract. I think you guys have convinced me to run Forrest run.

If they are expensive to maintain for them currently then it may open the door for you to show more cost effective options with what you sell and supportWhen I started servicing copiers they used toaster ovens for fusers.....I'm oldComment

Re: Should I fool with these machines?
That's true but this particular customer uses a different company for providing their copiers and I provide service in areas they do not travel to. The only reason they have Xerox is because they were in place already when this customer took over. I might propose servicing only on a per call basis.

Re: Should I fool with these machines?
do you have someone to call for tech support on Xerox? UNLESS you are certified on EACH of those units and hold a valid tech ID.. forget about calling xerox corporate ( their tech support sucks... you can do all the RAPs on your own.. call them up and you have to start @ square one all over) Item's Inc 800-367-4836 is a parts/support for Xerox and Dell that I sometimes use... but they really do over price the parts . Just an FYI.Comment

Re: Should I fool with these machines?
Not really, sometimes I use Hytec and they have led me to the right area. Depends on what machine you need help with and who you talk to

If you decide to work on these there is a supplier in NJ that offers technical info and parts for these models and other Xerox machines. When I started servicing copiers they used toaster ovens for fusers.....I'm oldComment

Re: Should I fool with these machines?
Being originally trained on Ricoh myself, I found the wc57xx series very unintuitive to work on. The 75xx I remember as 'not brilliant' machines and lots of waiting for firmware updates and main board problems.
These however, were never my bread and butter machines, so ymmv.Comment
