I'm getting random black splotches on b& W prints and copies. See photo. Colors don't seem to be affected. What could be causing this? Contaminated 1st BTR? Replacing the drum had no effect.

If you run a lot that uses color, but uses very little black, it can "stress" the black developer material because of rotating all that time without much toner being used.
Although it doesn't sound like to have the issue in color, it can happen that way, too. Running a lot, or a long job, in color mode, but that doesn't use hardly any color.
As mentioned by Flash, replacing the developer material will solve it. However, if it is due to strain from a long job that used very little of the color, it will (usually) eventually fix itself if you run a job that actually uses the toner and allows plenty to flow through. You can speed the fix up by printing some solid-color pages to force the machine to pump some fresh toner in there.
This is all assuming the toner is genuine. That same style defect is common with generic toner, too. The generics don't work.

pull all consumables .... including belt.... VACUUM entire machine.... inspect items one by one when replacing ... clean laser glass... you are wasting time by " shotgunning " the fix
might help if you listed the pages on the items and a PRINT from the machine highlighting the issue
