What kind of toner does the xerox 700 use? is it the same as the 550?

looking @ the specs I would say no.... the quality is the same but the 700 seems to have better Fiery options therefore a high-end quality user

700 and 550 use the same toner but the cartridges are different and the toner chip

Like Tecnico_Xerox said: the 'handle' is different and so is the chip. Amount and type of toner is exactly the same.
