DC420 X flashing in display + paper symbal

Customer called with X flashing in display and paper symbal in upper right hand corner of display. Customer says paper in tray and hears lift motor when pushing tray in. Nothing happens when "machine status " or "access" is pressed.
I understand that fault display could probably be accessed after ribbon cable is disconnected from board in rear. Could it just be casette board? Frank/ActionPhotocopy

I believe it is just flashing and had paper symbal on in the upper right corner of display which makes me think posibly casette board for tray one which is default tray. Frank

I was at customer's office yesterday and the X was walking with paper tray symbol in upper right hand corner of display. Machine would not go into ready and could not access machine status or diagnostics mode.
I disconnected ribbon cable to main board and was then able to enter status mode. When I pressed paper supply status it showed that tray 1 was not in machine. I thought this was odd because when tray was put in the lift motor was activated. I did not change battery as I had not seen the back of the machine as was not sure of the specific battery.
I swapped casette board with no luck. Do you still suggest changing batteryor with additional info do you think it is something else?Frank

Hi.The symbol in the right corner means that the machine could not print the start up page.So this could be hapened because the tray is the default tray for start page. However you can change it throught diagnostics (tray priority). If you still have the same problem then yes,try that with the battery there is only one with coin shape.I dont have something else on mind. Good luck. Gregory

Thanks Gregory. Doesn't that battery have to be soldered onto board.? Frank

if the battery is soldered you had to remove the( +) pole and(-) with a sold.iron and then sold back but sometimes the battery has its own base and it is easy to remove with hand

shorting out the battery for about 2 mins with machine off normally works for me,or pulling out paper trays and switching on the machine works sometimes. And changing position of the jumpers on the mfsys board was another trick, then place them back into normal postion.
                    Last resort replaced mfsys pwb.

Thanks again Gregory + Tech9. How do I short out the battery with the machine off. Just put meter leads on both contacts of battery for 2 minutes in ohms mode? Frank

put the one lead at (+) and the other at ground with the multimeter in (dc) mode

                          good luck

I was there today and shorted the battery in the ohms and ac voltage mod. This is before I saw Gregory's mesage about dc mode. I tried it a few times and used positive and negative terminals of battery as well as tp1 with negative lead. I did not have any luck. Though I held it for a bit I did not hold it for 2 minutes. Is that necessary . I probably held it for 30-45 seconds. If I need to go back and do it again i will. After shorting the battery didn't work I tried disconnecting the ribbon cable to the maion board to access key operator function. I tried to change default tray from 1 to 2 hoping that might take it out of locl-out but no dice.
Should I have tried desoldering one of battery terminals and then resolder? Would that have reset? I haven't been able to get a pwb battery yet.Frank
