Grey background are often related to the HVPS-PWB

The most common issue with this printer is a faulty waste toner system. You can verify this printing a multi-page document and opening up a cover during the middle of the job, which will stop the printer. Examine the drums and belt for a film of residual toner. The belt would have a grey film and the drums would have a film of the corresponding color. Let me know what you find out and I'd be happier to help you further.
