Fiery X12 - Wont start or recover

If I start my Fiery X12, it gets stuck on the screen that says "Loading...."

If I hold down the the fourth button next to the LCD, before starting the machine, the service menus eventually appears (after a long wait).
However, if I select any option, the screen goes blank and nothing happens.
(In the past, I could select the "Restore BackUp", but now it just goes blank.

Incidentally, the light on the CD-Rom drawer continually flashes. You cannot also not open the drive (unless you use a paper clip). I am not sure if this is related.

Does anyone have any pointers or suggestions.

    Thanks!

      Hi

Will any hard disc work? Or do I have to use a special one?

When you start up the Fiery, it goes through some tests before it reaches the "Loading..." screen.
It passess the configuring HD controller test. However, it now takes a good 5 minutes to complete this test (in the past it would whizz through it).
Does this mean it is the HD controller that is the problem? Is the HD controller the same as the hard drive?

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.

        Hi

I have read on this page that sometimes the Fiery Hard Drive gets bad sectors. You can repair the sectors by putting the drive into a pc and using testdisk or Spinrite

I have taken the hard drive out of the fiery and put it into my computer.
In my computer's bios I get a screen that shows all the stats of the drive. (e.g. drivename:"Quantum Fireballlct0" capacity: 8455MB, cylinder: "16383", head:"16" etc)
This must mean that the drive is working, it just has bad sectors. Is that correct?

The only problem is that once the drive is my computer, Windows wont start.
I have set the Fiery Hard Drive to be a slave, following the jumper instructions on this site.
But Windows still wont start. If I take the Fiery Drive, out then Windows will start.

How can I get Windows to start with the Fiery drive in, so I can then repair the Fiery with testdisk.

I would be grateful for any help anyone can offer.

            Nothing for nothing
sometime a faulty cd rom in those old computers will cause the bios to stall
reseat all the connectors and try again
yes anyhard drive will work as long as it is th same size in past experience
