    [CQ] MFCL6900DW and drum life

    Good afternoon.

We've got a customer with a MFCL6900 which we had to replace the drum at just 13k pages. My boss decided to put an aftermarket drum instead, and of course it died at just 16k total count.

I'm not questioning the aftermarket drum short life, but the original one - is it normal to need to be replaced so far from the 50k life pages they're supposed to last?

The problem that made us replace it was dark shadows at the edge of the page - exactly what I'm having now with the aftermarket drum.

I'm a Ricoh tech with some Konica Minolta experience, and also a little bit of Kyocera, but almost none of Brother (except for the Ricoh rebranding).

    Thanks.

We have original drums run past 80k mileage but with OEM toner. Aftermarket drums almost same but with OEM toner. Any other toner is half and less depending on dirt in the bag.

It appears to be original, but I'll check tomorrow. Thanks for the input - never thought aftermarket toner could decrease so drastically the drum life - usually I see it causing dirty copies or bad quality, but rarely killing drums.

Some guys will pour aftermarket toner into original empty cartridges then adjust resetter gear...so it's not that easy. Disassemble drum unit and if waste is dark black only it's not original toner.

not sure about this model, but some models came with a starter drum unit... and starter toners.

How long should a drum last in Brother printer?

                  approximately 15,000 pages

15,000 pages (1 page/job). There are many factors that determine the actual drum life, such as the temperature, humidity, type of paper, type of toner used and so on. Under ideal conditions, the average drum life is estimated at approximately 15,000 pages.

How can I check the remaining life of the drum units? - Brother

                    Partially correct brother
6900 has no different drum units but indeed came with starter toners rated for 12k.
I would just say that if original drum works with original toner they will last at least 50k 99% of time.
We had really very very few failed prematurely out of hundreds and hundreds.

Btw, those are great machines in my opinion and I love to maintain them.
