I quite understand that. I think you need to reread my post again. we are saying the same thing. my point is a previous poster showed him it is a hardware fix and not software. later on he said

If every question here is answered with a yes or no, then the forum would be quite messed up. you also have to have a bit of logic in your question and answer.

You're right, we are saying the same thing, hsrmms is confusing us with him saying "I have similar of this kit but do you have last version of firmware for HP 5500nd and I will try uploaded to HP 5500n to see if it works". It seems kinda fast for him/her to get the upgrade kit over night, you would think they would have tried it before performing any update. It just sounded like he/she just wanted to install the firmware to the 5500n with the original formatter installed to see if it will work, mho.

So all you have to do is order the firmware, right? You don't need a whole other formatter.

HP have two formatter boards, one for simplex and one for duplex. You have to order the duplex board or upgrade kit for duplexing capabilities. Firmware will not add duplexing to a simplex printer. Just thought there might be a dimm that can change a model to a duplex, my mistake. Now wondering how printerworks did to make a upgrade kit.
