    HP LJ 9050 tray 4 keeps changing to custom

    I have a bunch of LJ 9050's on-site here, and several of them have this issue. Once in a while tray 4 (the large capacity tray) will show that it's set for custom sized paper, even though the slider in the tray itself is set for Standard. If you change the paper size in the settings back to standard, a message will show on the screen saying that it's recommended to manually move the paper size slider back to Standard (which it's already set for).

    Has anyone else seen this issue? My first guess would be replacing the switch that detects whether it's set for standard/custom, however this has happened on at least 3 of these printers in the past few weeks so it's unlikely that 3 of these switches went bad at the same time (though not impossible... I may end up ordering a switch just to see). Updating firmware did not help. Thanks in advance.

      Just replace the paper size sensing assembly first, they do go bad.

          Follow that cable back to where it plugs into the board on the tray 4 assembly. Unplug, replug. Same thing for the connector on the switch itself.

                  Printerdude, would that cause a message saying that you need to adjust the custom size lever? It seems like the printer thinks the lever is in the custom position rather than the standard position, but it's not showing a weird or incorrect size.

                      I am having a faint recollection of this problem. Let's see what I can find ...

                      Here you go:
                      "Recommend Move Tray Switch To STANDARD" indication, when printing from tray #4 (C8531A). Misfeeds jam code 41.03.00, 13.06.00 alternating. The frame of the paper deck has parallelogrammed under the weight of a very heavy printer. The paper size switches miss the plungers on the tray. Jam code 41.03.00 means 'Unexpected Tray Size'. Square up the paper deck and tighten the screws that secure the four front corners. Re-position size switch ~2mm to the right for good actuation.

                      The faint recollection is removing the tray, then using a tape measure to check the squareness, measuring corner to corner. Bring along a medium sized pry bar to reform the frame. This is a two man operation. I found a cooperative volunteer, loosened the screws, torqued the frame over to square, then had my volunteer snug up the screws. I can't remember if they are 5.5mm heads ... I think they are. Bring the appropriate nut driver to get a little additional torque on the screws. Enjoy! =^..^=
