cm6040 email issue

OK ive set the smtp up and tested the connection.. come back good, yet when i go to actually send an email it say "connecting" then it says "gate way un responsive"???
Can i get a little light on why it connects at set up but not when i go to test the email?

sending port and pinging do not use same port number so if pinging works that does not mean the smtp port does.
Maybe ssl issue.
Isp might be blocking certain ports
Wrong user name or password.
