Anyone know if you can buy just the back stop for the paper tray? I have bought these for the 4200, 4014 etc but never for the 2420.

Well, you can only get the whole cassette from HP, so that's not going to work.
If there are any places that service HP in your area, you might see if they have a boneyard. If they do, they might be able to help.
An alternative vendor might be able to help, but the one my mothership uses doesn't look too promising. You can try it if you want though.
You might also ask here to see if any of us has one of them.
