The error you describe means the printer had a problem initializing the carriage.

When you turn the printer on, and it moves to the left end of the platen and starts searching for the mark on the end of the platen, does it search and search and search? Or does it find it right away and continue initializing?

If it spends a lot of time finding the mark, then the carriage likely has a bad line sensor. Unfortunately on these printers, the line sensor is considered part of the carriage assembly. If you're really careful, you can try reseating the tiny ribbon cable going to the sensor, but chances are you'll need to find another carriage assembly. I would replace the trailing cable while you're at it.. if you can find one. These printers are geriatric.

Also make sure that mark on the left end of the platen is clean.

Try disconnecting the trailing cable at the electronics module, then power it on and see if it does anything. I don't remember on these if they WILL initialize without the trailing cable connected, but it's worth a shot.

If it does initialize, then you've got a bad trailing cable and/or carriage assembly. If not, you could have a bad electronics module. Be sure to remove any RAM installed, and reseat the firmware module too.

Remove any RAM.. the printer doesn't need additional memory installed (it has 4M internal.) Reseat the firmware (which looks like RAM.)

If nothing helps, you have a bad electronics module.

I think you accurately described the problem. You got a response from the forum's top designjet guy. But if you want to check the door switch or cover switch or whatever, just get a meter and check it.
