I've seen 10 year old printheads and inks in printers that worked just fine. If the printer displays "MONITOR" for a printhead, it means monitor the output and if you see a problem, replace that print head. The printer does slow down (essentially disables bi-directional printing) when a printhead shows MONITOR. It will say MONITOR purely because of the age of the print head; usually after 12 months of being inserted.
There's a print quality test print you do as well which will show you how all the nozzles are working for each printhead.
