[Error Code] HP Design Jet 800 5:10 code

The customer called because the interlock switch for the top cover is intermittent. That was easy enough to fix, the cover just needed to be pushed
down a mm more. I put an adhesive strip on the actuator to give it a little more travel.
But this machine kept giving the 5:10 code to replace the formatter. OK I can do that after locating one.
I did notice that the fan on the power supply did not come on after the machine booted up.
My question is this, does this fan come on when the power supply comes up to operating voltage or does it come on right from
the start or does it monitor the temp of the power supply and come on after a certain temp? And as it is in close proximity to
the formatter, if the fan does not come on could the heat effect the formatter after time?

I am only getting the formatter code no other codes for fans or what not.

    Thanks

The fan in the power supply should always run. If you mean the fan on top of the electronics module, that runs on some mysterious schedule. Usually while the printer prints, but I'm not even sure that's the case. So it's normal to see it not running while the printer is on.

5:10 usually means the hard drive on the formatter has died. You can replace just the hard drive.

      Kiran,
Thank you for your reply. I'm not sure if it's what I wanted to hear but it does make sense.
Is there something special about that HDD? I have located a formatter for this machine.
But so far I'm not sure about the power supply. I suppose I could replace just the fan.
Do you have a line on another plotter say a T610? They have the 42" 800 now and it also
needs a belt. I feel if I fix everything, it should last a few more years.
      What's your experience say?

      Thanks

The only thing special about the 2.5 PIDE hard drive is what's on it. I do have an image of the drive if you want to get a blank drive and image it. But for the trouble, the cost of the pre-formatted drive from Tabcom is a good deal.

I doubt the fan needs replacing. Again, I'm not sure if you're referring to the small fan on top of the electronics module, or the fan inside the power supply beneath the electronics module. If the one in the actual power supply isn't turning, that could be a problem. The small one on top doesn't run all the time.

I'd honestly take a 500/800 over a T610. The 500/800 is a remarkably long-lasting machine. I have a customer with a 24" that's had over 3,000 rolls of paper put through it. Depends on their needs, of course. If speed is an issue, they need to consider a new machine, such as the T1700 or a T790/795.

The belt is a bit of a process but if you're not familiar, LPS Computer has videos on how to do it, and they sell the belts, which are equal to one you get from HP.

Re: HP Design Jet 800 5:10 code

I have located a formatter, hopefully it has the software to work. I'm getting it through laser stop.
If I need the firmware I will post a message.
And yes I was referring to the power supply fan. I suppose I could remove it and find one at Frys.
I have been working on the HP plotters for about 5 yrs and most of the time it just needs the belt
replaced and some cleaning. But I have replaced the carriage assy, service station and power supply
on a couple of others. Doesn't seem to be a big deal the book tells it pretty good.
Thanks for the information on the power supply I may be able to fix it.
At least I know it should be on all the time.

          Thanks

I think the PSU fan runs all the time, or at least when the printer is on. I've rarely ever had a bad PSU on a 500/800 so I can't say for certain.

OK, well I already told my customer it is suppose to be on all the time, or at least when the print is in use.
I'm thinking to just use it the way it is and see if it pops a code.

              Thanks again
