Re: DJ T830 needs update after replacing main PCA

i HAD 2 usb DRIVES. One with the two downloads, one with the latest firmware. Nothing happened with either of them. Then I realized they were both NTFS. I had an old usb in my pocket, so I asked the customer if I could use their PC to format it Fat32 and put the firmware on it (my laptop is on the fritz). I was going to try the two downloads first, but when I tried, I saw that those files didn't transfer the way I thought they had. So I just went ahead with the latest firmware. That uploaded, and the printer went through the stages of upgrading, but then eventually, it returned to the same screen asking for the update.

I have the correct files now on a Fat32 disk,. and I am going back this morning to give it one more shot.

Dang. That was supposed to work.

Just a sanity check; you had the USB stick inserted and then turned the printer on, correct?

Not the first time. The screen said to insert USB drive, so that's what I did. After it uploaded everything and then returned to the same screen, then I did various things like start it with USB inserted etc.

This morning, I went back with the downloaded files and was not able to make any changes at all. Nothing happened, no matter when I inserted the USB.

I sent you a PM but for everyone else following along at home: Based on what you've done, and what I've been told, you have a bad main PCA from your supplier. You'll have to return it as DOA and get another one, and I recommend getting it directly from HP so you avoid going through the same routine with another DOA board from your supplier. If I can find out what dates are considered good I'll let you know.

Criminy--this call is never gonna end.

I finally got a new board (none of the updates solved the problem). I installed it and went through entering the date. The system started up but then got to a window that says "Insert letter sized paper into manual feed tray." I can't get by that at all and inserting a sheet into the manual feed tray does nothing.

I tried booting into mfg mode, and tried to load a roll. I'm able to choose those menu options, but when I stick the paper into the slot, nothing happens. I'm not sure if you can actually load paper in mfg mode anyway. I tried a reset, and had to choose a language and all that. Nothing helps.

I have to decide now if I got another bad board, or if something is wrong with the machine... possibly from sitting there in disuse for 3 months (it took that long to get the first board).

Sounds like it's trying to do an alignment. On the last one I touched, I replaced the printhead and got that message, but instead of letter sized, I loaded the roll paper (inserted it until it stopped and the printer took it from there.) Then it said something to the effect of the wrong size paper expected, and asked if I wanted to continue anyway, which I said yes, and it carried on.

Are you certain the sensors are all connected correctly? Sounds like it isn't aware that you're inserting media.

I've got all the cables at the board inserted correctly. As for the rest of the machine... well, I never touched them so I couldn't know but I inspected and cleaned everything I could get my hands on. The paper present sensor of the roll feed is different than the one for the stacked sheet feeder, so I should be able to load one or the other. Is there a setting somewhere in that would identify one as the preferred paper source when doing an alignment? Maybe the sensor for the sheet feeder is bad and the one for the roll feeder won't work because it's impossible to load paper while in mfg mode. I'm guessing here, because with the old board, I was able to get to mfg mode but was unable to load paper from there.

Oh it very well may not load paper in the support menu/mode... unless you're doing one of the tests that require paper.

I replaced the OOP sensor and this machine finally works.

Upate Required. I am getting this presently as well after replacing the main pca with a new one from extraparts.com.

Is the cure to still get a proper replacement main pca from HP--mine has mf. date 05/05/22? I tried to update the FW via USB but as shown earlier in this thread, it did not work.

Thanks for anything. I figure I will have to get a replacement new main pca. Gosh dang it!

FWIW, Repairatrooper who posts often, a lot, in the HP wide format forum states--btw, I have the SM but have not come across what he speaks of yet, don't have time right now.:

"If the firmware update did not fix it then likely hard coded identifiers such as serial number need to be entered into the NVRAM of the printer. I do not have those instructions in front of me at the moment. Will try to post back later today. I the meantime if you check online you can usually find someone who has the service manual posted online and that is where you will find the instructions."

I will try to post back anything new that I find.
