CLJ 5550dn: "68.0 Permanent Storage Write Fail" and seems to calibrate too often

I have a Color Laserjet 5550dn which comes up with "68.0 Permanent Storage Write Fail" at power-on which seems to indicate it can't write to NVRAM. It prints fine after pressing the check mark to clear the error.

But it also says "Calibrating..." after every power-on, and also when awakening from powersave. I think that's abnormal, right? I assume it's related to the 68.0 error.

Where's the NVRAM that can't be written to -- on the formatter or the DC controller? Is the fix to replace one or both of those?

    Thanks!

To initialize the NVRAM on an HP Color LaserJet 5550 printer, power off the printer, then power it back on. When the memory count appears on the control panel display, press and hold the Down Arrow button until all three control panel lights flash and then remain lit. Then, press the Up Arrow button, followed by the Menu button. The display should show "SKIP DISK LOAD". Finally, press the Up Arrow until "NVRAM INIT" is highlighted and press the Select button.

Thanks Lance15 ! Initializing the VRAM did not work. Neither did swapping the firmware CompactFlash card, the JetDirect card, and the RAM module.
The "68.0 Permanent Storage Write Fail" remained.

So I replaced the formatter (with a used one, after all this printer is very old).
On first boot I got a "68.1 Permanent Storage Full" and initialized the VRAM.
Now there are no errors on boot.

I could be imagining it, but since changing the formatter, there seems to be some mild horizontal banding in color photos that was not there before.
The test pages look normal, though. How likely is this to be related to the formatter replacement? Any suggestions?

Give a Full Calibration a go:

        Menu
Scroll down to Configure Device and select it
Scroll down to Print Quality and select it
Scroll down to Full Calibrate Now and select it

This will take a few minutes to complete
