Laser HP MFP, color, automatic duplex that doesn't spy on me

    Hello world,

I recently purchased an entry-level HP laser MFP that came out last year. It is one of those compact laser HPs that offers HP Smart. I am on GNU/Linux, so I can only scan using HP Smart. The problem for me with the solution is that it is asking me for permission to send information to HP that I couldn't opt out of. It promises that it will not send out compromising information about my documents, but I don't trust it after too many privacy scandals last 20 years. So I tried to use it without giving it a connection to the internet, however after a month or so it refuses to print anymore unless I give it access to the internet again.

I'm not a printer tech-, or working for a printer repair company, so I am looking for recommendations of HP color laser MFP printer solutions. I want to buy HP because my experience is that they offer good support on GNU/Linux. I don't mind older models as long as the quality of prints is top notch. I will use it for (1) copy, (2) scan, (3) print in colors and black toner. It should have automatic double-sided printing and support at least A4 paper. I don't plan to give it access to the internet, but I could give it access to the local area network.

Could you recommend a good model that doesn't require internet to phone home to ISA and can do all the things that I need? I have been looking at the CM3530, but I am not sure how to get the scans off the printer and over to the GNU/Linux machine.

Thanks for reading, and I hope any of you could suggest something.

    Kind regards from Mikkel

IMHO, HP is now crap. HP used to be a very reliable brand. Not so much any more. Dry toner or inkjet, HP is crap.

Stay away form any ink jet machine. Period.

For a dry toner box you might want to look at Kyocera or Brother (as two examples I have worked with). Theses devices may cost you more than a HP, but in the long run it will be worth it. The devices are of a better design and the supplies will last longer than in a HP.

Like I said, this is my opinion based on what I work on and see out in the field.

It might be useful to let us know what HP models you are looking at so we might suggest a comparable model from another manufacture.

Thanks for your reply. The models I have looked at are

      • HP LASERJET M283
      • CM3530 MFP. The specs I need are the following:

The specs that I am looking for are:

      • Laser MFP that works with Linux
      • It does color and bw
      • I can prevent it from phoning home (I.e. it will work even if I don't grant it access to the internet).
      • Print and scan quality has to be decent (above 600x600 dpi for print and scan)
      • Double sided printing (auto duplex)
      • The possibility to use non-orginal toners
      • It is nice if it can print from USB flashdrive

I hope that can guide you on what kind of printer I am looking for. The CM3530 is almost 15 years old now, was this while HP was still good? Do you know if it can do the things In the list?

Any laser printer that supports Postscript will work with Linux. Modern Linux desktops have a fairly wide selection of drivers available through CUPS, and if you find a printer that isn't there you can always just take the Windows Postscript driver exe and extract out the PPD file, which is really all the print subsystem needs.

To get all of the features you want, you'll likely need to look for a business focused device. Very few of my business clients have their printers on an internet granting network segment and their Ricoh, Xerox, and Brother devices all work without issues. HP has all but made their low end devices useless over the last ten years and even older devices aren't worth the trouble as even customer maintenance items are difficult to come by.
