HP 4015 blank prints when side cover is off

Anyone know how to bypass when the side cover is off to get prints on the paper when the side cover is off? There's a microswitch on the board that the cover presses when it's on that I thought was it but when I press it I get an engine test. That was fine since I was testing that sticky solenoid that I'd just cleaned and just needed to pass paper anyway, but it's one of those things I've always wondered. I'm sure it's a safety switch of some sort to keep the laser from turning on while the side cover is off, but the only thing I see is the little microswitch on the board. tia.

Don't know of any "safety" switches for side covers on any HP. Only "safety" switches are the door interlock switches.

I would think the black prints are from light getting to the laser because cover is off.

No, that's not it. You can lean the cover beside it and block light and it still does it, plus I'm pretty sure HP doesn't have a light sensitivity sensor in there anyway that keeps the laser from coming on and making blanks. I've noticed this before, but never really bothered with trying to figure out cause once you fix the problem and put the side panel back on it puts toner on the paper again. This is more of a curiosity thing, I like to know how things work but I just don't see what causes it print blanks with the cover off. I really thought it would be the microswitch, you can see the cover has a tab that presses against it once installed, but when I press it I get the engine test. Maybe I have to press it before turning on, I'll have to check cause that would make sense. Pushed in while turning on it knows the cover is on, pushing in after it's on gives an engine test. Hmm.
