    Designjet 500 86:01

    Designjet 500 error code: 86:01

    I have done the following without success:

    Cleaned and oiled slider rods.
    Replaced service station
    Replaced carriage belt
    replaced Y axis motor
    replaced trailing cable
    Replaced Carriage.

    Only thing I havent done is the stupid encoder. Any Ideas? Need some help on this one.

      Carriage movement test? Did you try to run the calibrations after changing all those. I do not think the encoder will help. At what point does it code? Sounds like you have covered everything as far as parts.

          The carriage belt and/or Y-axis motor should have done it. The bits of shredded belt pack into the Y-axis timing pulley. Have you oiled the carriage rail? Oh, yes, you said that. Hmmm... =^..^=
          If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
          1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
          2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
          3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
          4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
          5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

              yeah I thought so too. I did the carriage movement test and it gives me some results. I am not sure how to interpet them though. Since it did not come back failed I was reluctant to even change the carriage. It stops at different places every time. I was thinking it was a logic issue. what else could it be?

                  Is there any unusual noises when you do the tests or turn on machine. Does it sound like it is banging into any thing. The Encoder strip can be cleaned, but if it isn't put back in the correct position ti can cause binding and thro this code. This code indicates a carriage jam or delay. Sounds like the sensors are working. On the parts you replaced, the trailing cables must lay flat and not get folded over by carriage movement, you will get that code also. Words of experience on those two items.

                      The encoder is so bad I couldn't clean it, The carriage is banging into the things and I am not quite sure what you mean on the trailing cable. I did have some difficulty with it I wasn't sure how to position the mylar guide Is it to be under the clips or be loose. My first one. But It was the last part I installed. Let me know thanks.

                          Yeah these are fun. Trailing cables go under mylar and lay flat, except for the part that works back and forth with carriage. Is the carriage creasing or folding the trailing cable? That's a sign that it is hitting the cable and prob. causing code. These should run smooth, no banging. You should just here it humming back n forth. It should only click when the cleaning station is operating and the heads are unlocking. If the carriage is bouncing or banging somethin not installed right. I use 409 and a couple of rags to clean the encoder strip. Usually ink sprayed all over that is all.

                              is the encoder too clean? If any of those small black lines are missing it will confuse the machine. I have had them come out of the desert like they had been sandblasted.

                                  Try moving the carriage by hand it should move smoothly, if you feel any jumping then you dint clean all of the old belt from either the pulley or the motor. It could also be the encoder, if you have one try it.
