    I had the same problem as described. Turns out the fix is a pretty easy one. You will need to replace the small motor that moves the scanner head. HP will not sell you this part but I got it from I4FInc@gmail.com.

    The cost was $25 + shipping. If you e-mail them they will give you the particulars.

    I am by no means an engineer and I did this in about 20 minutes. It involves removing about 12 screws and plugging in the new motor. There is more information here if you are interested.

    Try to update the firmware from HP.
    I have had 4 of these and it was 50-50 that the firmware worked. Both that worked came back a week later.
    I stopped trying to fix them.

    Scanner error occurs only while attempting to copy from ADF: original jams in ADF, scanner motor makes grinding noise, and "Scanner Error" is displayed. Scanner functions properly when original is on platen glass! Replacing the ADF feed mechanism didn't help. Is the scanner motor bad? Thanks in advance.
