    HP 5M

Hi, Thats correct a 5M(actually customer has 2).Loves them but over the years they have slowed up. The memory in machine is what originally came with machine.Total memory is 22M and no flash simm installed. I can handle mechanical problems and quality issues but even the simplest software issues are a project for me.My customer wants to know if more memory can be added to this model and what would i need to do if it can be added.
    THANKS ANDY

    Re: HP 5M

More memory will not make the machine faster than it already is. The speed in which data gets transferred from the PC to the printer will be improved a bit by more memory, but not much. It is a slower machine. Is it the speed the machine is printing or the speed of the data transfer (time it takes before printer starts printing) that is slow? I don't remember for the 5m, since it was a long time ago, but I know the 4000 series can be switched to a lower dpi. Which means you can sacrifice some print quality to improve some printing speed.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Coke in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!".

I would recommend your customer a new machine. You can't support these old machines forever. There comes a time when the life of the machine is over. By the way, is your customer running a museum?

It looks as though you can add three C3146A 16MB Memory SIMM Chips to increase the RAM memory from 4 to 52MB, but your speed increase will be only incremental. But what do you have to lose? They're only $10.88 each:

Personally, I don't think the printer got any slower. Everything else just got a lot faster, while the HP LJ5M stayed the same: 12 ppm at best.

If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
        1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
        2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
        3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
        4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
        5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

If the customer likes his machine, I'd stay with it. Those were the workhorses of their time. I still have at least a dozen 4 plus & 5 out in the feild, the just keep going & going. Check the driver, I've seen that cause speed problems, especially in the 4000. Sometime you just have to try a different driver. Pcl, pcl5, pcl6, no pcl, whatever it takes, but it does seem to make a difference on different computers.

I just had another thought (scary, huh? Two in a day!).

Perhaps the customer is running an older, not-so-compatible version of the print driver. For the HP LJ5M you can find drivers up to Vista-32 and Vista-64.

If you're running Win7, you might try an HP LJP3005 PCL5e driver:

I think it's Blackcat's avatar and cute little kitty signature. It gets him into places other techs can't go.

Sorry. I got to thinking about that other post about XP sp2 and Samsung printers, and got to thinking that maybe there isn't even a suitable driver available anymore. Essentially getting to the same place via a different route. =^..^=

It was a good whine, too. I was impressed.
