lj 4250n I/O card not ready error

lj 4250 with jetdirect 620n card has been trouble free until recently. Now it won't boot with the card installed. Without the card it boots and prints via usb and parallel. Once the jetdirect card is installed the printer behaves badly. It will usually count memory and then hang up, showing the three HP Invent screens in a loop. Once in a while it will start up - then the configuration page shows both card slots empty. One time the it printed a second config page, EIO2 - JetDirect Page, which recognized the card but reported I/O Card Not Ready. This happens with any of the three jetdirect 620n cards I have.

Printer only has 42,000 page count. Have you come across this problem? I'd appreciate your reply.

Probably bad JetDirect card, but could also be bad formatter.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Coke in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!".

I did the cold reboot, a few times. Also removed and cleaned the connnectors on the formatter and the jetdirect card. Now the printer will initialize with the jetdirect card installed. That's progress! But nobody on the network can print to it. The configuration page, EIO 1 - jetdirect page, shows status 'I/O card not ready' and authentication failed. The config page, tcp/ip section, shows status 'Ready' with data for all fields in this section. I can ping the printer with no lost packets and reply times equal to or less than 1ms. Still not really sure whether the problem is in the formatter or the jetdirect card. Is there a way to find out, other than R&R one part or the other? Thanks!

IIRC the laserjet 4250 has a built-in NIC, and two EIO ports. Does this mean that the built-in NIC port is unresponsive? As a repair for a bad NIC portion of the formatter, I have added an inexpensive jetdirect card to one of the open EIO ports. You still have a couple of options, short of changing the formatter.

          1) You can move the jetdirect card from EIO1 to EIO2, to see if it works in the other port. If yes, congratulations, but your running out of functional ports on the formatter. It will have to be replaced soon.
          2) If the jetdirect card does not work in either EIO port, it could be either a bad jetdirect card or bad EIO ports. In this situation you know for sure that a new formatter will provide you with at least one functioning built-in NIC port, and possibly more if the jetdirect is still good.

If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
          1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
          2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
          3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
          4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
          5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Want to thank you for the replies. I got the printer going again!

Must have been oxidation, dust, or some sort of conduction problem. I just took the formatter board out of the cage and dusted it off, reassembled, then re-seated the jetdirect card in EI/O II, re-installed the package and its all good.
