    HP 5200 loud knocking

A client has an HP 5200 with a loud knocking noise. This sounds like it is coming from the drive section (which I have removed) and the gears seem a bit worn but nothing broken. There is still a feed and transfer drive section in the machine that I have not yet removed? I have tried different cartridges in it and still the same and have put the cartridge from this machine in another unit and it works fine. Any Ideas?
The knocking noise begins after initialize at power up.
    Thanks

I think I am focusing on the drum drive section, the large 133 tooth gear (coupling gear) seems to have quite a bit of play in it on the shaft, I noticed there are main drive unit gear rebuild kits available. Anybody have any experience with this problem?

I'm not that familiar with all HP ....... but, some of the older ones 4250's , etc, had a 'Swing Arm Assembly' that would need to be replaced, and it made a very loud knocking noise when it was broken .....
          Good luck .....

              How old is the printer?
              How old is the fuser?
              Have you replaced the fuser?
Does the printer sit for long periods of this with out use?

I would change the fuser first before anything else.

                  Re: HP 5200 loud knocking

If the noise seems to be coming from the left mid/left rear side, you probably have a weak fuser drive gear assembly.

Call Liberty Parts Team, Rich Russell and ask for part# gear-5200-gr-nn.

This kit has several gears that are all related. Also get the gear on the fuser that mates with the kit gears: RU5-0556.

                  Rich can help.

                      Problem solved
It was a main drive gear issue in particular the 133 tooth gear and the double intermediate drive gear that matches up to it. It seems that a small amount of wear in either of these gears is enough to cause this problem. The shaft that the 133 tooth couple gear sits on is about 1cm long and as the gear rides up to couple the drum unit it relies on the cam and bushing that the coupler sits in, to keep it centred. After removing the intermediate gear if you run your fingernail up and down the main helical gear of this double gear you will feel a difference in height, on a new gear this is not present.
