I hope I'm working with the same machine... Even the older ones should have the print feature from the web interface. It is usually under the information tab, look for Print it is usually the last one. It should open a dialog box and let you browse to a file. Browse to your PDF and it will print. This will isolate the controller from the driver. If it looks fine it is a driver issue, if it looks light it is a controller issue.

I still think it is a issue/setting on the controller. I forgot HP calls tonersave economode. I have seen that setting cause light prints. If it is already off, you could try turning it on, reboot, turn it off, reboot.

Have you done a cold reset? Or a Disk Init? This will wipe out all the settings, but does fix a lot of issues.
Disk init: Turn on the printer. When the memory count starts, hold down the right side start until all 3 lights stay on. Press 5, press 6. Wait for it to finish.
Cold Reset: Turn on printer. When the memory count starts, hold down 9 until all 3 lights stay on. Press 3, press start. Press 3 until NVRam Init shows. Press 6. Wait for it to finish. If holding 9 doesn't work, try holding 6. I'm not sure which works for your model.

If I am working with the same machine, from the home screen, scroll down press Administration. The options should be Information, Default Job Options, Time/Scheduling, Management, Initial Setup...
From the default job options>Image Adjust> Darkness, max it out.

In answer to Blackcat, driver settings always override what is set up in the control panel of the printer. Which is a good thought that I forgot about. Check the dpi settings in the printer driver. (I had an office that had 2 pc's printing to 1 HP 4100.) One pc printed a better image than the other. Reason, one had their driver settings to 1200 dpi and the other had it set to 300 dpi. 300 dpi means less toner used and faster prints, but 1200 dpi means better quality. Might be driver settings is what I'm saying or firmware (sometimes has to be updated 2 or 3 times). Try checking those 2 things may solve your problem.

Thank you prntrfxr. I think that is what I was getting at. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
          1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
          2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
          3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
          4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
          5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

I apologize for not keeping up with the comments, but it's been a whack-a-mole kind of week!.

So, thanks to Chameleon's guidance, I saw where to print from the web interface. That was the good news.

The bad news is that my test PDF printed with the same cruddy magenta-tinged whites.

My Googling has found dozens of situations where people have had to open and try several new magenta cartridges. I would experiment with this angle, but if the photocopies come out clean and clear, I am reluctant to waste time.

What do you guys think I could try next?

I realize this may be a shot in the dark here, but...

Did you try disable cartridge check from the diagnostics menu and switch the cartridges to a different slot? Then try the test again to see if it follows the cartridge or stays with the slot.

Did you try another transfer belt?

I can't think why it would happen when printing but not when copying other than a software/communication issue, but at this point it may not hurt to try these 2 things.

I did do a cartridge swap and the problem seems to follow the slot, not the cartridge. The test print came out cyan-tinged this time.

if the problem has stayed with the slot, then I would think you need to take a closer look in to it.
is the cyan shading match the magenta exactly?
it sounds like physical interference, ie; dropped toner on the slit glass or something blocking the light path.

I almost suggested the same thing but came to the same conclusion you did about the software. Though I didn't realize you could swap the cartridges around when you did that? Are they all interchangeable when you disable that?
