    cp1518ni color glitch

i am trying to print 4 x 6 photos and i get a blotch along the right or top long side about an inch and an eighth from the edge.
i am guessing that something might be on a roller somewhere but does anyone know what i am looking for.

the cartridges are new generics and print out on paper ok.
but i get like an area one quarter inch wide where the ink rubs off.

i have not started to check things out yet.

    any help is appreciated.

    update:

if i print a 4 x 6 on regular paper i get a good print with no issues irrespective of which paper type i select.
but if i print on 4 x 6 hp laser photo paper 220g using different paper settings, it usually gives me the weird print that i discussed above where it has trouble sticking to one area.
also, the printer seems to be cleaning after every 1 or 2 prints on the photo paper but not necessarily on the regular paper.

i am using win 7 and i understand i have no toolbox so i cannot do a paper path clean.

what's going on with the printer?

      "the ink rubs off"
      It is the fuser assembly

the ink only rubs off in a certain area of the photo and this is consistent from photo to photo.
does that still sound like the fuser.
printer doesn't have enough copies for normal fuser problems.
but it wasn't used for about a year and did require new ink.

A picture of this problem would be most helpful to getting that problem resolved in an efficient manner.

That being said, at least pull the fuser out and look at it, maybe turn the gears by hand if you can and make sure there isn't a flat spot on the pressure roller after sitting for so long.

On the other hand, does that blotch have a specific color? If it is always the same color you should check the paper path for a pile of that color toner. I don't know the specs of the photo paper you are using, but it has been my experience that photo paper is generally stiffer than normal paper and therefor will encounter toner piles that normal paper will not. The amount of toner where that blotch is will be far too thick to fuse to the paper properly and will brush off easily. If the blotch always appears on the end of the paper that comes out of the printer first, that is most likely the problem.

If you do find a pile of toner, do NOT vacuum it up unless you know for a fact your vacuum can handle toner. Toner is so fine that it will simply pass through the filters of most vacuum cleaners. Yellow toner especially.

Finally, generic cartridges sometimes contain toner or toner seals that aren't entirely up to spec. Sometimes that toner will not fuse to some types of paper properly, which will cause unwanted offset printing. Or the toner will leak out of them even when they are new. If the printer printed fine with genuine HP supplies but not with the generics, I'd actually check that first.
