HP LaserJet 4200dtn network error 82.0180

This printer is at a bank and all their print drivers are installed on a server at a different location. All printers pull a reserved ip address from their dhcp server eveytime the network is initialized. Also ports are designated for each device. The office person was out and their computer was off so I could not personally try test prints.

When I arrived to this printer it had a message saying Processing that it was stuck on.

I rebooted and it got all the way to "Cartridge Installed" and it would not go away. Would not respond to key presses and shows a steady green Ready light. Removing the cartridge made no change but motor would cycle after closing door.

2nd reboot same thing except the Data light was steady green as well.

Removed lan cable and all accessories and it would boot ok. Then after a few seconds of inserting lan cable it will show Processing forever.

One time after booting without the network cable I tried to print a config page. 1st page came out then it was just stuck with the message "Printing Configuration". Other times this did not happen.

Config page shows error 82.0180 which is a network error. Also I saw this error come up one time while I was there.

Printer has 615N jetdirect card and I tried installing it from EIO 2 to 1. Printer will not boot all the way and get stuck on "***************".

Put card back into slot 2. Eventually I could even boot to ready even with network cable. Before it goes to processing the config page shows it pulls the ip address everytime.

Did a cold reset and put the tray settings back in. Still has problems but acts different. Although it behaves slightly different with every boot.

Sometimes it started to show ready for much longer now. Was on phone with IT and they could not ping the printer. I rebooted while they did a continuous ping. Finally they could ping it. Was going to have them try a test print but it would fail before they could. I saw Processing soon and they would not be able to ping anymore. They verified that there are no jobs in queue.

I'm thinking cable and changing the port might be possible solution but this would be a lot of trouble with their structure as they would have to send some IT guys down to the bank. So this is probably the last resort right now.

I tried putting the jetdirect card in slot 1 again but it still wont boot past the "****************"

I know formatter could be an issue too. I decided to go ahead and order a jetdirect card as it would be the easiest thing to eliminate.

I'm am not even sure how to do an firmware upgrade on this printer if I can't connect to it properly.

I would have tried connecting via crossover to my laptop. But if it won't boot or configuration page won't complete without network connected, it's got to be the Jetdirect or Formatter, and the Jetdirect is cheaper.

It's still possible that some network device is sending non-print data to your printers IP address, but that would not affect a non-networked connection or via crossover. I had a Copystar that was getting CF248 code only when on the network. It worked fine crossover'ed to my laptop. I should have known though: During installation, the printer immediately printed off 35 pages of 5 year old print data, before I got a chance to install the print driver. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

As soon as you said 615 jet direct card I said BINGO. They are a money maker for me. Have replaced lots of them. Install a 620 network card instead if you have one. I have one you can buy or call Parts Now or Liberty . But that's the first thing I would do before I did a lot of troubleshooting. There is a bullitin about them. Really crappy network card. Paul the manual pusher has info on them being recalled if I'm not mistaken?

You said you ordered a new jet direct card. I hope your vender informed you about the 615 card being flawed. If they sold you a 615 card I would never buy from them again. Upgrade to the 620 card. Never have it fail again.

I install 3 615 network card in the same machine within 1 year. My customer was not happy and I was not happy.

The network cards they have now are better.

The 615 was replaced by the 620, then the 625, then the 630 , then the 635 etc. The newer they are the more expensive.

But the 620 card works GREAT. UPGRADE them to the 620 card.

        Did I make my point?

It prints config pages fine. Only time it would not was one time out of many the second page didn't print without network cable. With the cable connect the only time I could not print was when it locked up as processing. There were a few times after inserting the cable I would print it out and it was all zero out on network settings. Few second I could print it again just after it pulled the correct settings then it would go to processing. The one time missing the 2nd page is the only thing I saw that was unusual when the net cable was unplugged.

I actually thought later that I wished I put it on a different network. I actually carry an old linksys wireless router around with me. I will try that if needed if the new card doesn't help.

It can be hard sometimes with the banks IT to get them to change certain thinks on the network. They act like they have to move pyramids to do a certain change.

The firmware is 2003. Latest I saw is 2005. The only option I see other than Ethernet is to do it over parallel port but who has a computer with a parallel port these days. Maybe if I can get it to work on my personal router or crossover I can upgrade and hope it the firmware will compensate for the banks network. Assuming the card isn't bad

MR Bill: thanks for the info. I did order the 620N. I think we buy from Liberty. I looked in inventory for the 615N and it shows a description of: HP JET DIRECT 615N ***USE J7934A

So I ordered J7934A instead. Whoever put that in the description probably had the same thought.

When you print a config page you get 2 pages. The second page has the IP address and gateway settings etc. If it prints one. Sometimes it will not print a second page. ( Sign of a bad jet direct card ) Save that page. Or get IP info from there IT guy. You can program the IP address for the new network card though the op panel and the machine will work just fine after that. Liberty tech support can give you instructions on how to enter ip address setting etc if you don't have that info .. That's my guess anyway. Best too ya.

I am familiar with entering network settings. In this case though all I have to do make sure it is set to dhcp. I will have to give their IT the mac address for the new card. It will then automatically pull the ip they had set in IP reservation.

Well the IT from the bank called and said they found another card and fixed the issue. So problem solved. Of course now we have a card that is unneeded.

Send back to your vender and get a refund? OR if you service a lot of HP laser printers then that 620 card fit just about all models. HP 4200, 4300, 4350, 4250, 4000, 5000, 5100, ETC. You cost should have been about $80 from Liberty. ? 4 years ago they were about $200. WHOLESALE. Damn.

I think they sent the card back since it was unopened. The printer is on a service contract parts/labor included so billing for this client isn't something I have to deal with. I think they have a combination of about 200+ printers and copiers in different offices on service contract with us. The banks IT actually did us a favor.

I realize this is an old thread but I just finished troubleshooting an HP 4200 615n jetdirect card issue and thought I would share my findings. I'm not an HP tech (although I am trained on Ricoh, Canon, Konica and Oce equipment) but I was trying to help out a friend who 'inherited' this printer and the network card was completely non-functioning. I had an HP external JetDirect box at my disposal and managed to get the printer working with that but I was curious about why the internal card didn't work. Some of the previous posters to this thread nailed it as my research also showed the 615n card to be a universal disaster and should be replaced by a more recent (620n and up) card. HOWEVER I googled the card and found a very interesting 'fix' that I thought I would try as I had nothing to lose. The fix as reported was to 'bake' the 615n card in an oven at 385 degrees for 5 minutes!! Apparently the problem is cold solder joints. The front plastic card holder has to be removed first - then the card is placed on a baking sheet with all 4 corners of the board supported off the sheet and when the oven is preheated placed in for 5 minutes. I tried it and I'll be damned if the card started to work afterwards!! I'm still laughing about it but it does make sense that cold solder could be fixed this way. Since this printer was a gift my friend was not going to spend any money on it so this fix was ideal!!
