    Hp recomends not fanning the paper; Whats your opinion?

    Do not fan paper. Fanning can create static electricity, which can cause paper to stick together.

    Ive had people tell me that the previous technician told him this, but I thought is was BS. Whats your opinion? I have solved problems by showing customers how to fan the paper , tho I use the "S" Fan technique.

      I have two disparate thoughts on this topic:

      1) I have solve plenty of feed problems by identifying paper stuck together. If you know a way how to do that without riffling the paper then go ahead. Perhaps the "S" riffle is better?

      2) This came up on the Canon LJ1100 series printers and the myriads of HP and Canon lookalikes. These machines had a mostly vertical paper positioning, and they just loved to doublefeed. There were new style feed parts, and if the feed parts were brand new then might feed a single sheet for a little while. What I'm getting at is operators of these machines often had a stack of blank doublefeeds sitting next to the printer, and would stick that stack in. What do you know, but if that paper had been through the machine once, doublefeed (or even the whole stack) was expected, regardless of the condition of the feed parts. I'm guessing that the recently fused pages are of lower humidity, and more susceptible to accumulating static electricity. That's why the old style analog stack duplexers had anti-static strips all over. Remember?

      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.

          Not only less moisture from going thru the fusing unit, but also may have static on it from the transfer process. That's why many printers and copiers have static strips on their exits.

              Years ago during the analog days, Lanier told us the same thing. Since then, from what I've seen it depends on the quality of the paper and if the paper is in all other respects being handled correctly. So, I guess if the machine is in a decent environment and is being supplied with decent paper that hasn't been out of the ream wrapper forever and there is very little chance of a glob of wrapper glue ending up on the lead edge of the stack, fanning isn't needed.
              Otherwise, as usual, your mileage may vary.

                  spent 2 hours on a jamming issue. wouldn't feed all the way thru the nip of rollers. I even removed the stack of paper to check lift alignment. But until I fanned it on all sides did I find the glued together edge!!!!

                      My opinion on this topic is:

                      You should never "need" to fan your paper. If you are doing this in order to solve paper pickup jamming issues SWITCH YOUR PAPER SUPPLIER/BRAND!

                      There are literally hundreds of different laser bond paper options, stop being so cheap and try another source !!

                          That's all fine if you didn't sell them the paper. My previous employer was a office products seller, and all our customers were using the paper we sold. I've had plenty of opportunities to think of the right answer to the question: "Why are we only having trouble with your paper?

                          " ... because it's the cheapest paper made?"
                          " ... because our paper is inaccurately cut at 280.5mm by 216mm, and binds up in fixed guide LCT trays?"

                          Two truthful answers that I couldn't use. =^..^=

                              Very True! However, sometimes you have to sell them a different brand of paper for certain printers to cut down on calls. Always easier when it isn't your own paper though

                                      fix, that was F@$*** ing hilarious !!!!!!!!! just what I needed after a day like today !!!!!! It reminds me of a training video that Ricoh used back in the day, It was Two guy's named Mike. Two versions of the same service call 1 very very bad and 1 very professional. Funny as could be!
