HP Designjet 750c+ cartridges not recognized.

HP Designjet 750c+ cartridges not recognized. Customer complains that the machine starts up only in BW mode and only after some "fiddling" with the color cartridges will switch to color. However it gives than the indication that the magenta color is not present. I he takes out the yellow one suddenly magenta shows presence but when yellow is reseated magenty fails again. Have to go there tomorrow, any ideas? How does the machine recognizes that the cartridges are present or not? Hans

I've only worked on a few of these, but I believe ink detection is done during head cleaning. Ink of each color is spit past an optical sensor. If the optical sensor did not reach a certain threshhold it determines that ink is low. Most inkjets work this way.

The (4) heads are separate and easily replacable.
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

      common

I've run into this about 8 times, and in everycase the carriage assembly needs to be replaced.

      C4708-69113 is the part number.
Be sure to check to make sure the drive belt does'nt need replacement as long as your in there.

The dangerous part on this job is the trailing cable, on some units the cable dries out and the traces de-laminate from the plastic backing, if this happens you will need to replace the trailing cable as well.

Thanks for the input guys. I found out in between that the cartridges are from May/2002 so most likely they are dried out or the ink has solidified. The customer will first get new ones and inform me about the outcome. Hans

The big tip off on this one is that it will not recognize the magenta cartridge first, and after pulling other it might regonize the magenta but not other colors.

it's always good to make sure your customer is useing good inks, and you really don't want to stick old inks into your newly installed carrige.
But if I were you I'd go ahead and source out the carrage assembly.

            I totally agree with lasersharp.
Also look at the connection pads in the carriage assembly for each cartridge. If these are dimpled the carriage assembly is the problem.
