    HP Designjet 510 ,86:01 and 87:13

    Hi
    My Hp Design jet 510 is giving me a 87:13 and 86:01 errors on power on . Mostly its 86:01. I tried to perfom a carriage movement test from the service mode but that test failed and i got a test shutdown message with a some kinda friction from the right side of the machine .

    I moved the carriage by hand and it moved freely. Belt is in good condition with acceptable tension. Could anyone advise me on what to check or replace.

    I am dont usually touch HP unless necessary but its a local holiday and I wont get any tech's for atleast a week. I have replaced the belt and carriage on another HP design jet previously . Thats about experience i have .

      Visually look for belt shavings, could be bad belt.

      If belt is ok, clean and lube rail carriage moves on.

      Ensure encoder strip is clean.

      Does carriage stop in same place, if you move it to different positions?

          Hi
          87:13 Means Unable to read the Carriage Encoder Sensor

          Switch the Printer Off and wait a few minutes.
          Switch the Printer On again and check if the Error Code has disappeared .
          If the Error Code continues, replace the Carriage Assembly or the Encoder Strip

          86:01 Is Carriage-Axis shutdown

          If this error code appeared but was NOT caused by a paper jam, then try the following:

          Too much friction in the Slider Rod. Enter the Printer Information utility
          and check the Scan-Axis usage.
          If the percentage is close to 100%, then lubricate the Slider Rod .
          The Carriage is bumping into the Service Station. If the carriage
          is stuck at the right hand side of the Printer and cannot be moved
          out to the center of the Print Platen it is because the Service
          Station cannot uncap the Printheads. In this case replace the
          Service Station/Aerosol Fan Assembly
          Perform the Carriage Movement test

              belt is okay .

              Encoder is more or less okay

              carriage dosent move much from the position where its kept . I ve tried left extreme , right extreme. middle moves an inch and stops no matter where i keep .

                  If the carriage will not move no matter where you place it, the problem could be in the part of the carriage that reads the encoder.

                  I had a tiny spec of ink on a line sensor that drove me nuts for weeks. The encoder looks grey, but those are thousands of tiny black lines that the carriage reads to know where to move. If the carriage stopped in the same place each time, there could be a spot on the strip. If it will not move anywhere, and you are sure the strip is clean, I would be looking at the carriage. The rail needs to be slick. I had one that would not work no matter how many times I cleaned and lubed the rail, until I got some Tri-Flow oil. That slick stuff made the thing run. Clean the rail and lube it generously. If it still won't run, make sure the reader on the carriage is clean. It only takes a spec.

                      I'd agree with it being the encoder strip, or the reader in the carriage. If you or someone else cleaned the encoder strip with alcohol, it will cloud the plastic and cause the behavior you describe. The encoder strip is much less expensive than a carriage, so I would try that first if there's any doubt.

                          kiran: how do i clean the encoder strip . We cleaned the encoder strip with alcohol after this problem appeared.

                              Just use water and a paper towel. If you used alcohol and now the clear part of the strip is cloudy.. you'll want to replace the encoder strip.

                                  update

                                  eureka!!!.

                                  cleaned the encoder strip with just a cloth .

                                  lubed the rod with silcon oil .

                                  Immediately the carriage started to move. but gave me couple of 86:01 so spread out the oil evenly and was able to do the carriage movement test .

                                  everything working perfectly now. Thanks a lot fix and kiran . you guys saved the day
