We have a customer that is complaining about poor copy and scan quality. When they print, the images are fine; however the copies and scans are several shades lighter than the originals. We have adjusted the toner density all the way to five but this isn't helping. We know it's not the transfer roller or internal mechanisms because the prints are good - does anyone know of a way to override the default settings on the copier to adjust the exposure levels? The customer is complaining about having to adjust the exposure settings every time he makes a copy, so we're wondering if we can change the exposure default.

Re: HP M5035 Poor Copy and Scan Quality
I agree with nmFax here. Try pulling off the plate glass and check/clean the mirrors? All optics should be cleaned, likely some dust built up over the mirrors. Don't forget to clean the actual plate glass on both sides while you have it out.Comment

Re: HP M5035 Poor Copy and Scan Quality
I'm thinking there's going to be a little more to it. On most HP's you have to remove the scanner assembly, remove the document feeder, flip over the scanner to remove a handful of screws, then carefully release a bunch of snaps. Then the scanner splits into two halves. It's not the sort of thing you would do on every visit. =^..^=If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Re: HP M5035 Poor Copy and Scan Quality
I always figured the scanner calibrated itself off the white plate under the glass, no matter what. But I had one HP (don't remember the model, but it was an older one) where paper on glass copied fine, but the paper through the doc feed came out really light. I cleaned the hell out of that white deflector on springs in the doc feeder and the copies cleared right up.Comment

Re: HP M5035 Poor Copy and Scan Quality
Yes, we've cleaned the optics and the scanner glass and the white board. Even switched out the transfer roller. Prints are fine, but copies and scans are light. I'm not sure there's a fix for this on this particular model.Comment

Re: HP M5035 Poor Copy and Scan Quality
Thanks Max, I'll try that and see if it helps. This is the second M5035 that this customer has owned and they complained about the previous machine doing the same thing. That makes me think that this isn't a hardware issue, but just constraints on the software for this particular model. I'll let you know what happens - we'll redo the optics cleaning and change it to scan text only.Comment

Re: HP M5035 Poor Copy and Scan Quality
It only happens when they copy or scan - the prints are fine, which makes me think that it's a software setting or an optics issue, not the transfer roller or toner cartridge.Comment

Re: HP M5035 Poor Copy and Scan Quality
Decided to troubleshoot a little for you, after speaking to a few other tech contacts I have out of a few other offices, they forwarded me the following.
"The Service Manual seems to point to 2 areas -
Poor uniformity - The ADF white backing is not uniformly pressing the original against the flatbed glass.
Check the ADF white baking for damage or warping. Replace the white backing if necessary.
OR
The lamp inverter is producing uneven light output across the bulb.
Replace the scanner optic assembly or the entire scanner.
Also, have you cleaned the white calibration strip(s)? (I think they exist on this model anyway) and have you tried changing the print/copy density settings to a darker setting to see if that makes the copy output more acceptable?"
Have you attempted any of the above? The part that caught my attention the most was the lamp inverter, have you checked this out?Comment

Re: HP M5035 Poor Copy and Scan Quality
I spent countless hours working on this problem and finally repaired this and other problems it was causing (poor color scans on legal paper) by replacing the ADF P.C.A. The part number is on the board and is not expensive.Comment

Re: HP M5035 Poor Copy and Scan Quality
We're still sruggling with this issue - the problem we're having is that on 11x17 or 12x18 scans, prints, and copies the last two inches of the images are coming out lighter than the rest of the image. If we take a clean 11x17 scan and print it out (bypassing the scanner), we still get light printing on the last 2 inches of the page. If we take a clean 11x17 page and reduce it by 50%, the 8 1/2 x 11 copy is clean too. 8 1/2x11, 8 1/2x14 prints, scans and copies are all fine. It's limited to the trailing edge of the large size paper.
Anybody have any thoughts on this one? The unit has a new fuser and a new OEM transfer roller.Comment

Re: HP M5035 Poor Copy and Scan Quality
[QUOTE=theengel;474890]I guess you confused some of us with the first post:
When we scan, it looks fine on the computer. But when we print it out the last two inches are faded out. My tech thinks we might have a communication error somewhere between the PCU and Tray 5 where the 11x17 paper is loaded, so the unit is actually cutting off the image transfer process at 14" instead of 17"...
Any thoughts on this being the case?Comment
