    Lexmark XC4140 - Scanner - Lint /fuzz

I have a new Lexmark XC4140 aka Toshiba e389cs that somehow has gotten a piece of lint/fuzz/hair attached directly underneath the narrow scanning slit glass. I think it might be a factory defect but it is too late to make a claim.

The customer is complaining about unacceptable scan images.

The scanner unit is factory sealed and costs approx $550.00 Cdn to replace plus a lot of labor to replace.

I prefer to spend neither the money nor the labor to fix this problem.

If I drill a very small hole into the sidewall of the plastic opposite the lint/hair/fuzz and insert the long thin plastic nozzle from a can of compressed air into the same to blow away the offending debris, do you foresee any problems?

I do not think there is any metal in my path.

    Thanks,

... so I found a dead Lexmark XM1145 that is only good for parts.

The sealed scanner deck is very similar to the one used by a e389cs/ XC4140 .

I drilled through the plastic side wall with a larger than I needed drill bit and I could see there was nothing there to block the flow of compressed air onto the bottom of the slit glass to blow away any fuzz/ lint debris.

I think I'd try to pull it out through the hole, then cap the hole. Look for a tool like this:

      3-Pronged Parts Grabber | Hard Plastic Coating | ShowMeCables.com

      Spring Grabber

LABOR SAVING DEVICES LSD53310 53-310 LBS Mini Pocket Retriever (LSD53310)

      =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
      1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
      5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

That grabber you're talking about comes in handy in many different situations. I've used them to grab onto a pin on an IC chip. Good for tight spots when measuring voltage.

Lexmark (or who ever they bought the design from (as they buy designs from others) scanner disassembly/access is absolutely horrible) Pure FN s#!t, why does it take 30 minutes of covers, removing doc feeders, lay the machine on its sides , Rubix cube crap just to clean a mirror in the optics cavity? I too have thought about drilling a hole in optics cavity of "Lexsharts\Shitmarks" for this same reason too. Asked one of their reps... Do you even make your own designs, he had the gall to say "yes"..

... I did attempt to replace a fuser on a Lexmark A4 XM3250 that I got back for free. The amount of time required for disassembly and complicated reassembly for what should be a simple task was crazy. I immediately thought the scanner assembly was the same bad service design.

Drilling a small hole and blowing out the dust took two minutes. Done.

You can get into them. We had a scanner rail go dry so I contacted our rep to ask what oil they recommend for the scanner rail. He said none, replace the scanner.

I ordered a few lubes and the techs settled on Super Lube. We normally use Lubit-8 but wanted something a little beter.
