I am looking for a new color laser printer. I am getting rid of my old printer because I found out that it sends information to the manufacturer about my printing. Do you know whether any of the manufacturers offer open source drivers such that such behavior could be audited?

And if you select no, does it still send some information? is it possible to use it without giving it any connectivity to the internet? My HP printer refuses to work after a while if I take internet away from it.Comment

Almost every manufacturer asks upon complete software package install if client permits sending of statistics data to it. Easy to say no or just go add printer way and point it to only actual driver file.A tree is known by its fruit, a man by his deeds. Oh, so what is this? Thankfully, I assume it is not the 'Printer Police' that came to visit with a moral speech. I'd like to hear your reason for saying that to anyoneComment

Oh wow you just lost your 1 point of Rep Power that you get automatically for joining and acquired 4 Red Cards
Lets see, started working in the industry in 1980, been a member here for 5+ years and has 290 posts. I would say he has experience with multiple manufactures.
You need an attitude adjustment or you are not going to get much help here.Comment

Re: Open-source drivers
Do you have experience with any of the manufacturers?
To set up a print driver RAW is to set it up totally manually in a windows system. That means set up the port manually, usually a TCP/IP port. Then usually browse out to the print driver .INF file or sometime .PPD file. Then tie it all up and test the print driver and make sure it works. You do have to have the manufactures driver to do this. But installing a print driver RAW or manually steps around the manufactures built in BS that sends reports.
At least in my experience.
I hope this helps.Comment

Re: Open-source drivers
The transmission of that data has got nothing to do with your print drivers...
That data will be collected on the machine itself. Manufactures are not looking at sensitive data or rather not supposed to anyway..
Who said there is nothing like a bad question. Why does this thread exist?
Mmm Huawei and Hikvision should definitely not make printers and time soon. Xerox back in the day had a camera strapped to the machine inside...WhateverComment
