8508A series, dead display, no power, green light

We swapped out a batch of 8008A's in a school for the newer 29 series in late June.
Techs were at the warehouse going over some of the low volume returns that we can
    sell or use for spares.
I've heard of this before, but he had one when powered up, no fans/motors, NOTHING
    but the green power light.
He removed the fuser, powered it back up and it came back on, but obviously said insert
fuser unit. Without powering it off, he put the fuser back in, closed the ADU and the machine
died, save for the green light. Powered it off, stuck a different fuser into the machine and it
    came to ready.
They brought the fuser to me. I checked for a short between the frame and the coil, thermistors
etc...nothing. Checked the thermostat, it was open.
Now how are you going to get a C447, 471 code if the display (whole machine) is dead.

In looking at the AC wire harness, the thermostat feeds back into the LVPS through the IH
    interlock & IH board.
Is there something in the LVPS that kills the entire machine if the thermostat is open?
If so, how is it suppose to display the 447/471?
Or maybe after so many 447/471's the software is programmed to just say screw it and
    kill the machine?
Haven't had a chance to pop this one into another machine to see what it does.

Just trying to think outside the box a bit.

I haven't seen it myself, but it's common enough for me to have heard about. Our guys would just swap out the whole fuser, so I never had a chance to diagnose it down to a specific component. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Tech took the fuser over to our warehouse, placed it into a machine that was working. The minute he closed the ADU,
the machine died, save for the power LED.
He's bringing me the CSV files & fuser so I can figure out what is causing this.
      MMDT2 tool to the rescue.

MMDT2 didn't show any Cxxx codes at all so apparently if/when this happens, it kills the
machine before it has a chance to write it to the error history.
Ripped the fuser down, I can't find ANYTHING other than the thermostat open.
I've emailed one of the ATSG guys to see if they know anything about it.

ATSG hasn't heard of this. Suggested opening a ticket, if it happens again.
