    Board repairs etc

How many of you are actually taking the time to fix MFPB's PRCB's PWR Supplies. Just curiosity of mine.

I know replacing is the quickest, but at times replacement is not necessary.
.OK Google! ... will I need Berrocca this morning?

We don't do much repairs with the exception of some standard issues we know a fix - most issues are just too hard to trace and fix with basic electronic knowlege and equipment.

Our company spent a lot of money on the right repair tools and we fix prints for the OEM here.

We send them off to a company called Hi-tech. They also give tech for board related issues. Repair all brands.

Same here. They will also ship a repaired board so customer down time is reduced.

The diagnostics is not the problem, it's the size of the components and multiple layer boards. I've done a few solder touchups here and there, but haven't repaired cold solder joints on a power supply in a decade or more. The components are so small that I can do much more damage than good. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
            1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
            2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
            3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
            4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
            5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Some board are still expensive and if it is something like a nic connector may worth the time to repair. I think, it should be left for the people who has the right equipment and who can provide some warranty for their work. The average tech does not come near a solder iron these days, much less for board repair. Cold solder in not common like it use to be, as they have vastly improve in the materials and techniques, thus less failure than in the past. IC component troubleshooting is time consuming.
Also done improperly, can cost money and headaches and why most just replace.

Thanks for your replies. At previous work I had the opportunity to work tiny bit with hot-air solders etc. but not anymore now.
                  Thanks for the companies suggestions!

Since the eyes aren't good enough to see the tiny components and the hand isn't steady enough to hold a soldering iron still, you can't get detailed circuit diagrams and most of the IC's are proprietary designs and not available and we haven't got a wave solderer, no, we don't repair boards.

I did track down a triac that kept failing but the dealer in Taiwan would only talk to me if I brought 10K of them. I only wanted 5

looking for some other info i just found this post and decided to chime in.
i use to use hytec all the time for my ricoh and minolta brds i couldnt fix myself but now many years later i priced brd repair for ricohs and they are
                      much higher than nationwide.
luckily i usually will buy one or two parts machines and just rip from them.
or check with some fellow techs for a parts machine that i can buy a used brd from.
