High praise to President Trump tonight for authorizing upwards of 60 cruise missiles at the Syrian airbase that launched the chemical attack this week.

President Trump said, "Tonight, I ordered a targeted military strike on the air base in Syria from where the chemical attack was launched," he said from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. "It is in this vital national security interest of the United States to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons."

The young refugee girl whose tweet about her experiences in Syrian civil war captivated much of the world earlier this year, turned back to Twitter Friday to declare her support for President Donald Trump.
Seven-year-old Bana Alabed, who lives in Turkey after escaping war-torn Aleppo, tweeted that she "welcomed" the U.S. airstrikes on the Shayrat air base.
"I am a Syrian child who suffered under Bashar al Asad & Putin. I welcome Donald Trump action against the killers of my people," Alabed wrote on Twitter.

The chemical attack images that Bana Alabed tweeted were used three days ago by Nikki Haley, US Ambassador to the United Nations, in her sharp criticism of Russia and in some small way prompted President Trump to launch this weeks cruise missile attack on Syria.

This week's cruise missile attack in Syria was the first time in Donald Trump's presidency that he enjoyed majority popular support from both Republicans and Democrats in Congress and around the world including influential Arab and Muslim countries.

Unfortunately, reported today, Syria has resumed military flights from the same airfield that was attacked by the USA. Also the same town that was attacked by chemical weapons on Tuesday was bombed today by at this time unknown military airplanes.

Surely, President Trump will soon be tested again on foreign policy.


As a side note, Syria is the largest buyer of ISIS black market oil stolen from nearby countries. I think that volume has now been severely degraded by Western forces.

As a side note, Russia's primary interest in Syria is that they now have both a very strategic military port and military airfield on the Mediterranean sea for the first time in modern history.

As a side note, Russia is not the only protagonist in Syria. Iran is very much manipulating the local forces to further its own agenda which is not friendly to the USA nor the West.

As a side note, Devin Nunes (R)- California, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee investigating the Trump Administration ties to Russia prior to the election has been forced to recuse himself because of allegations that he may have disclosed classified information to the White House in violation of the Congressional Ethics Committee. There is also an ongoing Senate investigation into the same manner.

People tend to live within information bubbles depending on their preference for Republican or Democratic party politics. Often outside ideas and contradictory news rarely penetrates that bubble.

This can lead to a snowballing confirmation bias that builds up steadily over time.

If, for example, you follow a lot of Fox News (the #1 rated cable news network in the USA) you develop a particular outlook on life. If you follow a lot of CNN, you probably have a different view of life. The two news networks cover the same news but can be remarkably different in the selection of news that they do not present or minimize to small print.

News is often complex and does not fit into a sound bite or tweet that can quickly be understood.

I like to think that as I am not a resident of the USA, I present a different view of life that might penetrate your information bubble bias. In Canada, we do not consider our political leaders to be infallible and as a result they are generally fairly open to criticism.

If you find my rant/ raves offensive, nobody is forcing you to read this obscure thread on a little know website that mostly caters to photocopier technicians who predominantly do not contribute money to maintain its operation.

A very heartfelt video from a Syrian thanking President Trump for the missile attack. I think these kinds of videos have impact in the Muslim world.

There are a lot of competing interests in Syria and every where I have read experts say things like, "this is the most complex conflict that I have ever been involved with in my entire career".

Military might likely can never solve this quagmire and the USA and the West needs not to get sucked in too deep.

I agree with an earlier post that the USA cannot continue to be "the policeman of the world" nor can it afford these costly foreign incursions.

Any President, including Donald Trump, needs skilled advisors to help present a list of best options from which he can make a decision.

The Trump team is by and large skilled business men but rookie bureaucrats attempting to run large Gov't Depts that are still far understaffed in many key roles.

If one looks at Jared Kushner, Trump's son in law, he is a very successful real estate developer by trade and has no public office experience before Jan 2017. Jared is in Trump's inner circle and considered by many to be one of the President's most trusted advisors.

Here is a list of the Gov't functions Jared has to oversee:

1). Oversees diplomacy with Mexico
2). Oversees diplomacy with Canada
3). Oversees diplomacy with China
4). Recently went to Iraq to advise the President on how to proceed in the war against ISIS.
5). White House broker for peace in the Middle East between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
6). In charge of US trade deals
7). In charge of the new White House Office of American Innovation
8). In charge of reinventing Federal gov't policies
9). In charge of infrastructure spending
10). In charge of modernizing the technology and data infrastructure of the Federal Gov't and its agencies
11). In charge of oversight of Broadband internet in the White House
12). In charge of re-imaging the Veterans's Affairs administration
13). In charge of solving the opiod epidemic
14). In charge of spearheading criminal justice reform.

I am sure Jared is a very bright and capable person but he is only one person. Each of these tasks would normally require an army of experts with a lot of specific experience.

Is the USA being well served when President Trump is trying to run the country like a family business?

President Trump is on pace to outspend eight years of President Obama's travel spending in one year. Trump's six trips to Mar-A-Lago is estimated to have cost $21.6M in his first 80 days as President.

The outsize spending stands in stark relief to Trump's calls for belt tightening across the Federal gov't and the fact that he regularly criticized Obama for costing the American taxpayer every time he took a trip.

The spending comes as President Trump asks the Federal gov't to slash non-defense spending by $54B, including deep cuts to the State Dept., the Dept of Housing and Urban Development, the EPA and the wholesale elimination of other federal programs. The President proposes to increase military spending by $54B.

President Trump and his family have proven to be an expensive first family to protect. Not only does Trump travel frequently but New York officials have said that it costs upwards of $146,000 per day to protect first lady Melania Trump when she is in New York and the president is not there.

The extensive needs of the Trump family have put strains on the Secret Service as well. Dozens of agents from across the country have been temporarily pulled from their normal criminal investigations to protect the large family. The Dept of Homeland Security will soon ask for additional funding to protect Trump and his family. Because Trump has a lot of children and grand children a lot more agents and uniformed personnel are needed and this all has to be paid for.
