Twitter Thwarts Trump's Latest Attempt To Get Back On Platform, Bans New Account


Former President Donald Trump’s most recent attempt to get a platform has been upended.
On the heels of the launch of his new webpage, “From the Desk of Donald J. Trump,” on Wednesday, the former president’s team created the handle @DJTDesk on Twitter. By Wednesday night, the account had been suspended.

“As stated in our ban evasion policy, we’ll take enforcement action on accounts whose apparent intent is to replace or promote content affiliated with a suspended account,” a spokesperson for Twitter said in a statement.

Trump’s “From the Desk” page is essentially a blog with a timeline format that resembles both Twitter and Facebook’s platforms. In the site’s brief life thus far, Trump has made a series of scattered, combative posts attacking the likes of Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). He also lambasted Twitter, Facebook and Google by name.

The blog page that former President Donald Trump launched less than one month ago, after his team suggested he'd be launching a major new social platform, has been permanently shuttered.

Jason Miller, a senior aide to Trump, told CNBC that the page "will not be returning."

Most of the Trump written statements through May, which include falsehoods about alleged "election fraud" and attacks on Biden and anti-Trump Republicans, still appear on the ex-president's website.

Trump aides announced the blog on May 4, releasing a video that advertised "straight from the desk of Donald J. Trump" and included references to his banning from social media.

Twitter and Facebook banned Trump after his statements in the wake of the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol in which his supporters tried to halt the counting of electoral votes that elected Biden.

Trump's critics relished the demise of the blog.

Tweeted the anti-Trump Lincoln Project: "Gone, but [easily] forgotten."

... the blog site was poorly constructed consisting mostly of long blocks of unbroken text that few people would ever read. The site rec'd little viewership while continuing to pander for donations.

Creating a successful blog that attracts and retains readers is hard work and Trump was not up to the task. He is used to writing only short tweets that got retweeted and picked up by many media outlets. His musings and gripes were largely ignored by the media as a sign of his declining influence.

This made me laugh out loud. Regular people have forgotten about this buffoon already.

QAnon Already Has 19 Candidates Running for Congress in 2022


As the GOP becomes more receptive to the conspiracy theory, more of the cult’s followers are running for office.

With 18 months to go before the 2022 midterms, QAnon supporters are already seizing on the GOP’s embrace of the conspiracy theory and throwing their hats in the ring for a seat in Congress.

So far, 19 people who have publicly shown support for the QAnon conspiracy theory have declared their intention to run in House and Senate races across the country, according to an investigation by Media Matters for America (MMFA).

All but one of the candidates are running as Republican candidates. The single anomaly is Mindy Robinson, who is running as an independent candidate in Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District, running under the “Patriot Party of Nevada” banner.

The number of QAnon-supporting candidates is likely to increase as the 2022 elections approach (in 2020 the final tally of QAnon supporters who ran for Congress was 97, according to a tracker set up by MMFA).

Like many of the candidates on the list, Boebert and Greene have sought to distance themselves from the most extreme fringes of the QAnon movement, despite repeatedly displaying support for the conspiracy on social media and in video interviews.

But there are some who are proud to express their support for QAnon. Like Jo Rae Perkins, a Republican running for the U.S. Senate in Oregon, where she unsuccessfully ran in 2020.

In a video interview with Right Wing Watch last year, Perkins compared the Q posts to secret codes used during World War II and said there is a “very strong probability/possibility that ‘Q’ is a real group of people, military intelligence, working with President Trump.” She also compared believing in Q to believing in Jesus Christ.

The candidates are located in all corners of the U.S., from New Jersey and Maryland to California and Colorado. But Florida, home to former President Donald Trump, stands out: 5 of the 19 QAnon candidates are running for seats in the state.

Among them is Anthony Sabatini, an incumbent member of the Florida House of Representatives and now running in Florida’s 11th Congressional District. In May 2020, he tweeted a link to a site that previously collected Q posts.

While the Republican Party’s leadership has sought to distance itself somewhat from the QAnon movement in the wake of the Capitol riot, where believers played a central role, many of the core beliefs of QAnon groups have been absorbed by the GOP.

In particular, the widespread belief that the 2020 presidential election was somehow stolen. The so-called “Big Lie” can be traced back to conspiracy theories first shared and promoted by QAnon groups.

A survey conducted in early March, two months after the Capitol insurrection, found that almost a quarter of Republicans believed the central QAnon conspiracy that “the government, media, and financial worlds in the U.S. are controlled by a group of Satan-worshipping pedophiles who run a global child sex trafficking operation.” And, disturbingly, almost 30% of Republicans believe that to fix the problem, “true American patriots have to resort to violence in order to save our country.”

• "LORD FAUCI EXPOSED," said one Tucker graphic. Another dubbed him "Lord Fauci, Patron Saint Of Wuhan."
• Sean Hannity jumped the gun last night with a graphic calling new revelations "the FALL of FAUCI."

Reality check: The theory most experts still believe to be most likely is that the virus was transmitted from a bat to some other species of animal, then to humans. That’s what happened with plenty of other viruses.

What's next: Trump plans a pair of rallies just before July 4. Look for Trump to try to make Fauci a punching bag.

• At that time, the social media company will reevaluate whether the risk to public safety of allowing Trump back onto its services has receded.
• This two-year suspension will prevent Trump from using Facebook or Instagram to broadcast to his followers until after the 2022 U.S. midterm elections.

If Trump is allowed back on the service, there will be a strict set of rapidly escalating sanctions that will be triggered if Trump further violates the company’s content moderation rules, Facebook said.
