    Freezer Printer

The Smithfield Corp, one of the largest pork producers in America has their main facility about 40 minutes away. It is huge, maybe about a third of a mile long and and eight deep. The end of it is shipping. It is a giant freezer that is about and eight of a mile square, and that is where we have copiers. Most are in office areas, but I have a Ricoh 6503 in the middle of the freezer, in an office, but the Ricoh 442 printer is in the cold. Sits at 30 degrees Fahrenheit, 24/7. Have had to explain several times that the printer is not smoking, that is steam coming out. So far this one has held up 8 months. Does anybody have equipment in extreme conditions? They have another section where they keep the temp at minus 15, all the time. Thankfully I don't have a copier in there.

Thanks for the info, who is your site contact, so I can pass this info onto my salesman?

I have a few machines in an industrial bakery but temperature is not an issue just extreme flour dust it literally gets everywhere!

My site contact is a very attractive woman named Valencia. Based on your listed location, let your salesman know it will be a 9 hour flight then a 2 hour drive in the country. hope he likes the smell of pig. This a start to finish place. They drop truckloads of pigs in one end and frozen bacon and ham comes out the other side.

        Wow huge site!

Does the copier not throw fuser errors!?

Print off a simple note & post it above the copier "Due the cold environment this copier may emit steam when printing this is due to high moisture content in the paper"

          Re: Freezer Printer

Yea had 10 printers inside a freezer before. All kinds of new fun scenarios.
Problem is they needed them at dispatch so next to doors going outside, the trucks did at least back up against foam seals to insulate this massive 1000 square meter freezer.
Every time there was an emergency exercise the all 10 doors opened at the same time and the moisture condenses like crazy all over and inside the machine.
Then all 10 machines would jam due to frozen/very cold wet paper and the developer unit will seize up due to frozen/very cold developer!

New machines work ok for a while but the bushings and bearings don't like it much.
Used first lexmark A4 machines. They where hopeless because of the toner rollers not making it past 5K prints.
Then Bizhub 36 machines! The electronics on these did not like it much and the nothing made its yield except feed tires.
Then the best so far was Bizhub 287 machines. Still a pain.

Working in there for more than 20min without the right gear will make you so numb you can use your hands properly.
Needed to be in there for hours before but wearing proper clothing.

Last you can move the machines outside unless you would like a soaking wet machine....

Could be better elsewhere and no in ZA where summer goes up to 40 deg C and 80% humidity!

There was a hundred other machine on the same contract that "justified" my suffering.
          Whatever

            Re: Freezer Printer

I had Canons in a refrigerated shipping depot at ~34F. They did OK once I extended out sleep mode to the max. If it went to sleep it could not reach "Ready" in time to avoid a fuser error. Handling the parts would chill my fingers. My customer did not mind the steam. Lots of other equipment steamed also, they understood. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
            1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
            2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
            3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
            4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
            5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

So far no fuser errors. It is a public printer with the poc hundreds of yards away in the office. So far they have just broke the paper tray and magenta toner bottle. The workers also don't understand the concept of a service contract. I keep finding it down, and its been down for weeks because everybody thought somebody else called in. I honestly have more issues with copiers at construction sites and places that have dirt drives or parking areas. The dust just kills my Ricoh's.

My biggest complaint about the place is having to walk past truckloads of bacon and they don't give out free samples to the contractors.

I currently have 3 Bizhub 4020 (Lexmark) at about 0 degrees in a freezer. For about 2 years, I haven't had any major problems yet.

I also have some copiers at a Smithfield. I hate walking into the freezer to get to the office where the copier is. I have 2 copiers located in the old freezer and I still have to wear a coat to work on the copier.
