PM only turned to Pfizer, Moderna after vaccine deal with China failed: O'Toole

CanSino was supposed to provide samples of the vaccine for clinical trials at the Canadian Centre for Vaccinology at Dalhousie University, but the Chinese government blocked the shipments

Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole accused the Liberal government Sunday of putting too much emphasis on partnering with a Chinese company for a COVID-19 vaccine in what turned out to be a failed deal.
O’Toole said the Trudeau government only turned its attention to pre-ordering tens of millions of vaccine doses from companies such as Pfizer and Moderna in August after its collaboration between the National Research Council and Chinese vaccine-maker CanSino finally collapsed after months of delays.

The Council had issued CanSino a license to use a Canadian biological product as part of a COVID-19 vaccine. CanSino was supposed to provide samples of the vaccine for clinical trials at the Canadian Centre for Vaccinology at Dalhousie University, but the Chinese government blocked the shipments.
“I would not have put all our eggs in the basket of China,” O’Toole said at a morning news conference.

If you look at the timeline, that’s when Canada started getting serious with Pfizer, Moderna, the other options,” he added.
“So that’s very concerning that in the midst of a pandemic, where we had already had early questions about the transparency of China, that the Trudeau government was willing to almost double down on partnering with China.”

I would not have put all our eggs in the basket of China

The government announced its major vaccine purchases in August after it confirmed the CanSino partnership had fallen through. At the time, it said its decision had come after careful consultations with its vaccine task force of health experts. The CanSino partnership with Dalhousie predated the deep freeze in Canada-China relations that occurred after the People’s Republic imprisoned two Canadian men, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, in apparent retaliation for the RCMP’s arrest of Chinese high-tech executive Meng Wanzhou nearly two years ago on an American extradition warrant. This past week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau created a firestorm when he said Canadians will have to wait a bit to get vaccinated for COVID-19 because the first doses off the production lines will be used in the countries where they are made.In the face of mounting questions about the CanSino deal, Trudeau continued to defend his government’s vaccine procurement policy, which he says has secured multiple options for the country. Trudeau also appointed a Canadian Forces general to lead the logistics of an eventual vaccine rollout with the Public Health Agency of Canada.

So, it sounds like you are saying that the US has the most cases but has only vaccinated 9.4 people in 100. That's pretty bad.

        Your deflection skills need work.

You'll do anything to avoid talking about Trudeau making a deal with China for a covid vaccine. I don't blame you.

9.4 people per 100. That's a terrible stat. No wonder you're trying to suppress it. It all makes sense.

"The CDC came out today and said that vaccinating teachers wasn't a prerequisite to open up schools. Everyone out there who is saying as teachers, we're not going to go back to school until vaccination occurs because not safe. The CDC just came out and disagreed."

Joe Biden says that teachers shouldn't to back to school. He's the anti-science president.

CDC director says it's not necessary for teachers to be vaccinated in order to reopen schools

Teacher unions and school boards have clashed over how to safely reopen schools.

While teachers unions and school systems clash over what is considered a safe return to in-person learning and President Joe Biden looks to reopen a majority of K-8 schools in 100 days, the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday it could be possible to get back to school safely without hinging the return to classrooms on vaccines.
"There is increasing data to suggest that schools can safely reopen and that safe reopening does not suggest that teachers need to be vaccinated in order to reopen safely," CDC Director Rochelle Walensky told reporters at a briefing. "Vaccination of teachers is not a prerequisite for the safe reopening of schools."

The Biden administration plans to work with states and localities on ensuring schools can open safely in the U.S. by prioritizing teachers' vaccinations, enabling widespread testing and providing additional guidance for school administrators on things like how to improve ventilation and PPE. Biden has proposed more than $170 billion for both K-12 schools and higher education institutions as part of his proposal to respond to the pandemic.
Some Republicans have accused Biden of not pushing back against unions hard enough on their conditions for safely reopening schools during COVID-19. Although there are educators who have begun receiving their vaccinations, some local advocacy groups have been pushing back against a full return to in-person classes until all teachers are able to get vaccinated.

"Science is not the obstacle. Federal money is not the obstacle. The obstacle is the lack of will power -- not among students, not among parents -- just among the rich, powerful unions that donate huge sums to Dems and get a stranglehold over education in many communities," Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Wednesday.
"An administration that puts facts and science first would be conducting a full court press to open schools," he continued.

He called it "goal-post moving" to say that federal money was the problem.
"As of last week, state and local school districts had only spent $4 billion of the roughly $68 billion we set aside for K through 12 schools. That leaves $64 billion in the pipeline already," McConnell said.
American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten responded to the Senate minority leader's comments in a statement, saying, "Teachers and school staff want to reopen. They also want to be safe. Why is that so hard for Mitch McConnell to understand?"
"Instead of working with the majority to pass a rescue package, the minority leader is playing politics with children's and teachers' lives. He refused to even hold a vote on what schools needed from May to December, effectively delaying reopenings and thwarting the resources needed to keep schools safe in the middle of a pandemic," the statement continued.
On Capitol Hill Wednesday, Biden's pick to run the Education Department, Miguel Cardona, was also asked if he thought both teachers and students must be vaccinated before returning to school.
Cardona told senators during his confirmation hearing that he thinks educators should be prioritized for the vaccine rollout, but he noted there are schools that are able to open using mitigation strategies.
"We have great examples throughout our country of schools that are able to reopen safely and do so while following mitigation strategies. While I recognize that that is the case, I do believe that making sure surveillance testing is something that we focus on," Cardona said.

Thousands of tennis fans descended on Melbourne Park to watch stars including Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams kick off the Australian Open on Monday

Spectators came out in force on an unusually overcast and chilly summer morning, relishing in the fact that they are some of the few people on the planet able to attend live sports during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is only mandatory to wear a mask indoors at the event, but many milling around outside were also seen with face coverings.

Many sporting events around the world have been forced to either postpone or suspend competitions due to the virus and enact strict limits on attendance or ban fans altogether.

The Australian Open organizers expect up to 400,000 fans to attend the tournament this year in a socially distanced manner, around half the number that were at last year's competition.

The presence of fans at Melbourne Park wouldn't have been possible if Australia hadn't brought its local coronavirus epidemic under control in 2020 with strict public health measures. Australia's government quickly closed its borders in March at the start of the pandemic, banning non-residents from entering the country, and put in place mandatory hotel quarantine of 14 days for incoming travelers.

When Melbourne, where the Open is being held, had a coronavirus outbreak in mid-2020, Victoria's government put the entire state into mandatory lockdown for almost four months, one of the longest measures of its kind in the world.
Australia combined its contact tracing with widespread, free testing. The country now has one of the lowest test positivity rates in the world, with 0.2% of samples testing positive in the past week, according to the Australian health department.

While other Western nations including the United States and United Kingdom have reported tens of thousands of new infections every day in recent months, Australia has gone weeks at a time without a single locally-transmitted coronavirus case.

Australia has seen fewer than 29,000 cases of Covid-19 and 909 virus-related deaths, according to the country's health department.

Experts says that Australia's success in containing the pandemic is partly a product of its geography -- an island nation that can easily close its borders -- but also the result of strong government action that was followed by most citizens.

Brendan Crabb, director and CEO of the Burnet Institute medical research group, said Australia has a population that's more receptive to following health advice than other countries, partly due to a long history of publicly funded health care. While Americans in a number of states protested stay-at-home orders as a breach of their civil liberties, Australians by-and-large followed the advice of the authorities.

Crabb said that while he originally wouldn't have supported holding the Australian Open in the middle of the pandemic, it was possible that the event could now be a "signal to the world" of what was possible when you achieve close to zero coronavirus infections.

"This is huge, I don't mean for Australia, I mean for the philosophy of Covid zero. This is a very sound way to live, it's sound for health, it's sound for your economy and it's also sound to limit the number of mutant viruses (developing)," he said.

"So you've got this showcase event demonstrating to the world how valuable Covid zero is. I think it's mind blowing it's potential."

All event tickets are digital and no cash payments are accepted -- all designed to reduce the risk of transmission.

"One thing we know about the pandemic is the uncertainty. And you never know what's around the corner," he said.

The USA has to deal with illegal immigrants crossing our border and Mexico is a hotbed of covid. Joe Biden refuses to follow the science and has instructed DHS to release illegals. Joe Biden's policy is killing an untold number of Americans. Biden should put an armed Military Force on our southern border. This is a national security issue.

No the promises that SnifferJoe made about opening up the border caused this.
The count of illegals in the USA has gone from 14,000,000 to over 20,000,000.
And those are already IN the states.
There's more waiting at the border. 1,100 Iranians have be taken into custody.

Dr. Fauci On Vaccinations And Biden's 'Refreshing' Approach To COVID-19

Less than three weeks into the new Biden administration, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the infectious disease expert who has headed up the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984, is encouraged by the new president's approach to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"It was very clear what President Biden wanted ... and that is that science was going to rule," Fauci says. "That we were going to base whatever we do, our recommendations or guidelines ... on sound scientific evidence and sound scientific data."
